Her Husband beat her savagely for years. She ran for her life. With her two children in the car, she drove a thousand miles before she stopped. After that day, the nightmare became a monstrous reality: homelessness. But, while living in the House of Refuge East, she gained skills, confidence, and healing. Today, thanks to her high level, well paying management job, she is a homeowner.
HRE, as part of the Continuum of Care network in Maricopa County since 1996, provides transitional housing (up to two years) for homeless families and individuals. Over 50 percent of our program participants are battered women and their children. Most referrals to HRE come directly from a community emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence. With rare exceptions, the people HRE serve are homeless because of a combination of factors including; poverty, chronic low wages, inadequate training or education, physical and psychological abuse, deficient life skills, and alcohol and/or drug dependency.
To Be Eligible for residency at HRE, participants must meet the Federal definition for homelessness, be willing to work or go to school a minimum of 30 hours weekly, and be stabilized from dependence on alcohol or drugs. Based on their ability to pay, residents pay up to 30 percent of their income for rent.
82 Two Bedroom Homes, located at the former Williams Air Force Base make up the HRE community. Situated on approximately 20 acres, these comfortable, well maintained, 1,000 square foot houses provide sanctuary for people to revive hope and work toward self-sufficiency.
Participants Receive services to help prepare them to make the transition to permanent housing and independent living. Supportive services typically deal with employment, education, emotional/mental health, medical and legal services, domestic violence, substance abuse, and transportation issues. Working together, staff and participants develop strategies to cope with problems and build skills. Together, they monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to short and long term goals.
Funds To Support HRE are provided through a Federal grant (HUD), foundations, churches, corporations, service organizations, and individuals. To keep our program operating, financial and volunteer help are needed.
