The Village of Hempstead is located in the Town of Hempstead. It is referred to as Hempstead Village to distinguish it from the Town of Hempstead. In addition to being the seat of government for the Town of Hempstead, the Village of Hempstead is also the most populous in the state of New York.
The Village of Hempstead was settled in the Spring of 1644 by thirty to forty Puritan families that had crossed the Long Island Sound from Stamford, Connecticut to Hempstead Harbor. Thw settlers made their way to the current site of Hempstead Village. The site of the settlement was part of land purchased by Robert Fordham and James Carman on behalf of the Puritans in the fall of 1643. The parties to the real estate negotiation in addition to Messiers Fordham and Carman were representatives of the Marsapeague (Massapequa), Mericock (Merrick), Matinecock and Rekowake (Rockaway). Tackapousha, who was Sachem (Chief) of the Marsapeague served as the spokesman for the Indian tribes. 64, 000 acres of land were sold for items worth less than $100.
