New Home Owner

Recently my husband and I sold our townhouse (Yippee) and bought a single family home.  It is interesting being on the "other side" of the transaction.  Most particularly, the things you discover only after moving in...

1. Closets.  What took me a few days to realize is that no closet in the house was set up to actually hang clothes.  The shelf systems did not have the continuouis rod to easily slide clothes back and forth in the master bedroom.  On closer inspection of the shelves in the other bedrooms, we noticed one had several shelves at different heights and several of them were not on the level, lliterally, they were sloped downward.  Nothing a trip to Home Depot and several hours of labor can't fix : )

2. Things attahced to the walls.  The pervious owners used the largest screws and ancors they could find to secure every little thing to the walls.  This would not have been a problem if they had not taken some of the shelves with them.  We now have several half inch holes in walls in each bedroom.

3. Speaking of walls.  I am not a fan of the paint colors in any of the bedrooms so the holes can be fixed when I repaint.  The rag painting trend must have had a huge impact on the previous owners because three out of four bedrooms have a rag painting theme with some of the worst color choices I have ever seen.

4. Carpet.  Only two of the four bedrooms got new carpet.  The remaining two bedrooms have thread bear carpet with no padding underneath.  Kind of makes me wonder what the two bedrooms with new carpet looked like if those were the "worst" of the four : )

At least now I have a better understanding of what my buyers go through after they purchase a home and finally get moved in, unpacked and settled.

Good luck on the repairs.  Funny how ,when we fall in love with a home, we tend not to see the minor details.

It is amazing at the things you notice once you start to make a place your own!

Molly,

Raiza took the words right out of my mouth.

I am picky. I take a magnifying glass with me even when I'm showing a home because I hate surprises.

Then I buy my own home and, took off my rose colored glasses and, found stuff I'd swear wasn't there when I first toured the place.

Oh well, little things don't matter much unless they're bugs! The big stuff got taken care of when you had the inspection done so go enjoy your new home. Besides, you have a husband who can fix things up for you!!

Now that you've had the experience, pass it on to your next buyer, they will thank you for it.

Congrats on the new house but hopefully the improvements come quick and easily.

Hope all is going well.
