You Want Number One In Google? Get Involved.

Warning: I am about to go on a rant about Google. I think you should read this if you are interested in SEO, but I just drank a whole lot of coffee and I type about 60 WPM. But if you are Google-obsessed, as I am, you will want to read this.

I've been obsessed with Google since it's very first days. No kidding.

google in 1998

I remember the exact day and moment that I found out about Google! It was like asking me where I was when I heard that Kennedy was shot, except I'm too young to remember Kennedy.

It was just about 12 and a half years ago. I was in a horrible class called "Advanced Systems Analysis." The prof put it on a projection screen and the whole class just started shouting out search phrases. The prof was giddy like a school girl; he really dug it.

And I was sold. I started using Google when it was it beta mode, 1998, and I've never looked back.

I've always had a pretty good grasp of the way it works. I thought I understood it. As it's changed, I've adapted and changed with it.

After all, I've been bouncing around from number 1 to number 3 for the term "Arizona mortgage" for at least the past five years. I haven't budged. I'm still there today. Tomorrow? Who knows.

As an Arizona mortgage broker, I feel that I might be qualified to help the person who wants to learn and to gather information about an Arizona mortgage. If not me, than at least ANOTHER mortgage broker in Arizona.

I want "Arizona Refinance" or "AZ refinance" for that matter. I used to be on page one for that phrase. Top five results for sure.

However, if you type AZ refinance into Google... <--- you can click there if you want to see the results in a new window.

...the results are shocking to say the least.

The first four results are almost identical websites. They even have similar titles! All obviously owned by the same person-- and not a mortgage company. This guy was so lazy, he created four websites that are identical, and they take up the first four results in Google.

He's not selling mortgages; he's not a licensed AZ mortgage broker; his websites control Google for "AZ refinance" though and they are identical. He is using an ugly blogspot theme... (but I might want to start using that theme myself)

He does link to a company called "mortgageloan.com" though... Very discretely, at the bottom of his "blog", for lack of a better term. On one of the blogs, he actually writes that "Arizona Wholesale Mortgage" is a good choice for an Arizona Refinance, but he doesn't link to me. He links to mortgageloan.com.

And mortgageloan.com is a lead generation company-- also not an Arizona mortgage broker. MortgageLoan.com is registered to a Madison Avenue address in New York City.

MortgageLoan.com takes number eight in the search results. The spammer that links to them takes position 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Position number five-- SHOCKING!-- it's actually owned by an Arizona mortgage broker. The only Arizona mortgage broker on the page. EVERY SINGLE OTHER RESULT IS CONTROLLED BY SPAMMERS.

Position #6-- is another lead generation company.

#7-- SEO spammer. Useful information, but not an Arizona mortgage broker. All you can do is click on Google ads when you get to #7. So we know why Google likes that one. #7 makes money for Google.

Same with #9 and #10. They are just "info" pages filled with Google ads. So much for Google's motto "Don't Be Evil."

THERE IS ONLY ONE ARIZONA MORTGAGE COMPANY LISTED ON PAGE ONE OF GOOGLE WHEN YOU SEARCH FOR "AZ Refinance."

Only one. It makes me envious that I am not that one mortgage company. But it INFURIATES me that I am not competing with MY ACTUAL COMPETITION-- mortgage brokers in Arizona-- but that we local mortgage brokers are all competing with big-money lead-generation companies like LowerMyBills.com,.

Because then the lead generation companies try to sell me leads that they get from stealing my Google positioning with unscrupulous methods. You've got to be kidding me.

I could go on and on about this, but I'll stop here before I bust a blood vessel.

It is important that we notify Google when our so-called "competition" does this. If you are an Arizona mortgage broker, you'll definitely want to do this right now. If I was the mortgage broker in position #5-- you know who you are-- I would take care of this RIGHT NOW.

Actually, any mortgage broker should want to take five minutes to report this. It's hurting all of us. If I was an Arizona citizen searching for information about an Arizona refinance, I would report this just because I would be annoyed at the results I had to sort through.

If these guys aren't penetrating your search engine presence yet, don't worry, they will be soon enough.

Google needs to know so that Google can get better. Fight the good fight and:

Good luck with the Google Dance .. I think everyone that targets SEO gets frustrated when they see results like these listed post search.  Google will catch up to them but it takes time which impacts our businesses .

I think that as long as Google has been out there, this has been going on.  You just need to make sure that you are providing great content that is useful to the consumer and get out there and update it everyday to make it sticky as Katerina says in comment #6.  Good luck to you!

I wish I remember the birth of google, but I don't.  It feels like I have always had it!

I agree that the ones holding the coveted slots should be competitiors not fake companies skimming for leads to sell to us.

I am so excited that you shared how to file a complaint.

Excellent rant.

Hi Michael,

I like your rant, but I think you could better spend your time targeting your frustrations at overcoming your competition. You say you have known about Google since their existance however, it doesn't seem you are targeting the keywords "AZ Refinance" and "Arizona Refinance" correctly to gain the rankings you desire. I checked out the sites you were talking about and I looked at your site. Here's what I think you can do to overcome them, or at least get in the top 5 again.

Step 1 - What page do you want to target the keyword? I assume it's this page: http://azwm.com/arizona-refinance/. As I look at this page it has duplicate content from another page on another website you own here: https://arizonawholesale.mortgagexsites.com/arizona-refinance.html.

What I would do:

  1. Remove all duplicate content from your page and start over. The page is nowhere to be seen due to the duplicate content and that is why you don't rank.
  2. Create a new useful page full of unique content. Make the page more than 1,000 words and make sure to include your desired keywords in both <h> tags and in the body. Do not spam your keywords but put them into your content naturally.
Once you have a new page, it will take a while for Google to cache it. You can help this along by tweeting the new page and adding a couple new links. If the page isn't penalized it should rebound back to the SERP's within 7-10 days once new content is added. Once the new page is indexed, I would start promoting it slowly and gradually. Increase your promotion over the next 3 months a little bit each month.

How to promote:
  1. Tweet to alert the page has changed. Add a link to your AR profile page with desired anchor text within newly added content. Wait for page to get indexed.
  2. Promote through your normal channels such as FB, Twitter, AR, and any other blogs you can link to the page with the best anchor text. But don't do to much to quick.
  3. Stay away from sitewide links to begin with. They can hurt more than help.
  4. Ask every Realtor you know if you can write a guest blog on their personal blogs. Add a link to the page with desired anchor text within your article or in an author bio. This should get you some nice links
  5. Rinse and repeat 1-4.
  6. Submit articles to industry related blogs such as Realtown, Trulia, Zillow, & Biggerpockets with links to the page. Do this once you start to see movement in the results pages.
  7. Increase the amount of domains pointing to the page with more links. You can do this by growing your guest blogging lists.
By this time, say 3-5 months, you should be pretty close to the top 5 if you do this right. Good luck!

That's a useful link, and good information. Thank you. I do remember reading that Google was updating its algorithms because too many SEO firms had taken advantage of the existing functionality.

It is a good rant! I've seen those pages when conducting searches on various things. It's really frustrating as the "searcher"! I imagine Google will catch up eventually. Battling loopholes is a constant job..

It bugs me that companies not in the business whether it be loans or real estate sales are snaking the top spots on Google.  They then sell the leads back to those of us who are actually in the business.

I find it vulgar and refuse to buy leads from them.

@Lisa Udy - great advice for all :)

Help rebuild this ecomomy; make friends with some realtors & get homes sold...better use of time, than chasing refi's in a rising interest rate market.

Lisa-- don't you dare apologize! Thank you. I do know a little bit... But I did not know that there was a duplicate copy of my site on the internet. That's huge. I never thought to Google my own content. The weird thing is that I subscribe to Copyscape and it "crawls" the web looking for duplicate content all of the time. So I never bother to check for myself. I have to really thank you for doing that for me.

To Everyone else: Thanks for reading. I will post more on this later. I did complain to Google and they do want to know. It helps their stock price go up when their search engine works better. They want to know about this kind of carp. (That was a typo-- meant to type "crap" but carp works too.)

Michael,

When I used to teach agents, one of my training modules was on site development.  Many agents said they wanted to be number 1.  Many agents from the same office, said they wanted to be number one.

So, I'd ask them, for what keyword...  Blank stares most often, then we'd start with one and I'd do a search and the "competition" that came up often times were the spammers.

As Lisa pointed out, there are steps that can be taken, but one must be aware of what one is doing.  What I've discovered is that so many agents get caught up in "what so and so is doing" that they don't keep track of, and or know what it is thay they are doing, online, if you will.

It ends up hurting the agent, in terms of online reputation and management, and well intentioned agents often just give up and continue "stressing" about what another agent is doing and it hurts the agents business more than anything.
