Big Island Oceanfront Tsunami Damage Still Unknown

Kona Pier Under Water

My Facebook page is full of mobile uploads from Kona, showing the Pier at Kailua Bay near King Kamehmeha hotel under water.

Friends who evacuated from Mauna Lani and Waikoloa Beach Resort and Puako have not been allowed back in, roads are closed, so no word on damage there.  I have clients turned friends at oceanfront complexes like Kolea and Halii Kai, will post reports as they come in.

My husband spent the night on a boat normally moored in Kawaihae Harbor, he helped his friend sail it out to sea to ride out the waves.  He's still at the harbor and reports 8' swell.

This will change my showing schedule for today, but feeling grateful Hawai'i was spared damage from the tsunami.

Prayers go out to Japan. One Japanese friend here reports her hometown destroyed.

A hui hou

Thanks for the news, Beth. So glad to hear the island was spared serious damage. We're scheduled to fly in Saturday night and then head up to the Mauna Lani. I'd love to receive any updates you might be able to provide.

@ Robin, the resorts along the Kohala Coast are fine.

Hello Beth,

I am coming to Puako in July.  I have heard that the Four Seasons is still closed, and I am trying to uncover any information about possible damage to the ocean-front  homes in Puako, and if the reef itself sustained any damage.  The above article by you is the only thing that comes up when I google.  If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you tell me anything more?

Thanks in advance,

Elise

Hi Elise

Puako was completely fine.  You will have a great trip!

And if you are interested in looking at property during your stay, of course you'll know who to call.

Aloha

Beth
