Are You Prepared?  Your Earthquake Preparation Supply Checklist

Our thoughts and prayers are with Japan as news from that country dominates the media today.  On a practical note, as we prepare for changing our clocks for daylight savings time this weekend in addition to checking/changing smoke detector batteries, I am providing this basic earthquake preparation supply checklist for your home, car and office.   Feel free to include any additional items I may have missed.

It's not a question of if but when an earthquake will hit our area

  • Flashlights
  • Batteries and transistor/hand crank radio
  • A-B-C rated fire extinguisher
  • Cash
  • Bottled water -- three to five days worth
  • Adequate supply of canned/non-perishable food --- three to five days worth
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Warm clothes
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Any medication you may need
  • Pet food

Michael - A few years ago one of sons gave me a five gallon can labeled "Earthquake Emergency Kit" and it is filled with enough supplies and equipment to last for a week.  I have replenished batteries and power bars--also keep several gallons of water beside it--if I have access to my walk-in closet I'll be fine.  I'm prepared for "The Big One" but I hope it never comes.

Norma --- what a nice gift from your son.  It's true replenishment is necessary -- another great idea when we change our clocks twice a year.  I'm with you in that I'm prepared but hoping I'll never have to use it in an emergency situation.

Hi Michael, this is a really good list. What an unfortunate incident that makes us all think about what we should have just in case.... I so second you on the hand-crank radio! When we got hit with a few hurricanes right in row many years ago that hand-crank radio my dad had bought for me came in very handy. My heart goes out to everyone effected by this awful event. Laura

Hi Laura, you are right disasters whether or not natural seem to provide the incentive to make sure we have things in order.   You're lucky to have such a thoughtful Dad.
