FourSquare: Good For Business or Invitation for Stalkers? You Decide.

FourSquare: Good For Business or Invitation for Stalkers? You Decide.

I just joined Foursquare about a week ago, tried it out a bit, also there was an article in the recent Realtor magazine that explained how real estate professionals can benefit from Foursquare. Because I am still new I am weighing the pros and the cons to this site. Listed below you will see the benefits and the downside that I have found to Foursquare.

PRO'S:

It gives you more opportunities to personally connect with people if you find that they are in the same vicinity as you.

You can become Mayor of your favorite spot, by becoming mayor that doesn't only give you notarity but also in some places, comes with some perks.

You can register you office on Foursquare, then you can share information about about your doing, like meeting with a buyer, closing a property, going to the team meeting, etc.

CON'S:

I personally am a paranoid individual.. If you ever look at my facebook post I never let anyone know what I am doing or where I am at, at any given moment. I don't feel that it is safe. My posts are usually pending (example: I am thinking about possibly going to Disneyland later) or Past tense (example: Disneyland was a blast!! Glad to be home!)

Let's just say one of your neighbors just happens to be a psycho-path that just happens to be on Foursquare and managed to track you down because you are regularly checking into the same vicinity that they are in, they know where you are, they know when you are not home, so they know when the best time would be to break into your house and take your 55 inch.

Of course on Foursquare you can check into your open houses and give neighborhood information, that is a great advantage, but the disadvantage is.... Any predatory person in that vicinity is going to see the opportunity in that and could very well take advantage of it.

Me personally I do not see the great benefit in Foursquare, that is just my honest opinion. I feel it challenges the safety and well being of people, definately making it easier for stalkers and dishonest people to take advantage of the information they are recieving on a minute by minute basis.

Everyone has their own opinions and are still developing opinions about this new media, but for me I don't see the benefit and I would prefer not to be stalked and not to have people know where I am at at every given moment, if you want to know what I am doing.... Call me... I answer my phone.

I share your concerns.  I don't see a huge benefit and the downsides are great.  I might not be as worried if I was a guy.  Not worth it to me.  Also, I find people's twitter updates on this rather annoying.

I am with you on the paranoia. I signed up on Foursquare and once I realized I was expected to post my every move, I was out of there and never went back.

I can see where the con's may out weigh the pros, however, I love it.  I have received so many discounts from checking into places, just last week I went to the Broadway play, The Lion King, when I checked in, a green button popped up giving me 20% off everything in the store!  I just showed my phone screen to the lady at checkout.  I have also met fellow CRS and REMAX agents at the conventions because they were at the same venue I was at, and checked in!  I think you just need to be careful.  Friend me!

Some great comments and things to think about!

While I get the "stalker" thing, I have long felt that there are ways to help keep problems away. To me, the benefits are greater than the risk. Connecting with business owners, making friends in the community, sharing local knowledge etc etc are things I enjoy about Foursquare. I can think of several good examples of connecting with friends and business associates via this crazy social network.

I happen to be one of the agents mentioned in the Foursquare article in the last Realtor Magazine as being a user. With over 1600 " check in's" I guess you could say that I think location based search is something many business owners should be looking at.

For me, it has been a fun way to mix business with pleasure. Connecting with people in my community is important, it is also something I enjoy. I usually don't accept Foursquare friendships from people I don't know unless I check out their profile before doing so. If they are a business owner or a friend of a friend, I typically accept. ( If you are not connected with someone, it is pretty hard for them to stalk you )

Thanks for the cool post. If you ever visit Tempe, please look me up. :)

I personally haven't seen the benefits of it from a user perspective other than the coupons but so few businesses are socially aware enough to be a part of it.

However, I don't see the safety consequences either.  If somebody is waiting for you to check in at Starbucks to go rob your house, chances are they have clocked your routine and know when you are going for a latte anyway.  If it is a stalker looking to track you down and attack you, chances are, they will grab you whether you are checking in or not.  Four Square might only save them a few minutes.

Stacey, I heard of FourSquare, but never checked into it. You've made up my mind to stay clear of it. Thanks for info.

Stacey - when I teach my classes on Foursquare and show agents how to get business from it - I aways suggest females check in as they leave.  The good news is that if anything were to happen an alert for help can be posted instantly and the stalker will be found.

I have seen the business benefits far out way the potential of "stalkers" but those fears are genuine and should always be considered when using social media

Nice post

Foursquare is OK. I'm not a fan of it though for the reasons you mentioned.

I'm on the "who really cares" side.  Unless you're famous, probably no one.  I also started an account on LinkedIn, but found it tedious.

I had an application of somekind on my Tab which allows me to see where my FB friends are and vice versa....when I saw the little icon showing exactly where I was it made me very nervous and I turned it off.

I'm not very familiar with Foursquare yet, so thanks for the breakdown! Seems to me that it might be a fun app between friends, but not very useful when it comes to generating business.

Foursquares concept seems intersting but the reality is much more creepy!

I share your feelings on this. I really dont need anyone to know where I am at all times. Not only is it unsafe, why would I presume to think everyone is THAT interested in my every move. Every time I go on facebook its already way TMI. Does everyone really need or want to know all their "friends" every thought and move...I dont think so.

Both positions are very valid. I've been on the site for a couple of years now. What started as as a marketing tool, has simply remained as a good way to get free tickets to races as "Mayor" of Miller Motorsports Park here in Tooele County. I don't post my home location, and those places that I do post to, it's as I'm walking out the door. Be careful out there!

I created an account and plan on using it more... I want to be a housed-hold name in the AV, Laguna area girly... And just because you check-in doesn't mean you just got there... you could be checking in just when you're leaving... ;) Have to be smarter than the average Joey~ Great blog ;)

Congrats on your feature.  I'm still trying to figure out why you're giving Zillow free advertising and inbound links from your blog pages???

You know, once they click off your page... chances are they aren't coming back anytime soon... if EVER.
