No matter what happens to you throughout the day, there isnothing more rewarding than having someone call you or personally say to you face to face how much you mean to them.  They appreciate what you've done or are trying to do for them.  

This happened to me today.  I had been working with a client who was in desparate need of finding a rental by the end of the month due to a layoff of 7 months from work.  

He is a good man, works hard and has always tended to the needs of his family consisting of four children.  He was beside himself when he lost his job to a layoff and, as a result, wound up losing the house he was purchasing over time (a rent with option).  Prior to all this, he knew that he was going to be purchase this home over time and he got the go ahead from the current owner to make upgrades to the home.  

Much to his chagrin, he lost his job for 7 months and, as a result, he has wound up losing this home he was working on making his own. He was besides himself.  He mentioned to me he needed to find something by the end of the month.

Well, that didn't give us much time, but we began to try and find something that would work for his needs and would be available for him in less than a month's time.  Of course, with what had just happened in his current home due to his layoff, we didn't have the luxury of finding a home for him to purchase.  We had to find a rental that would be perfect for a family of 4 children and his wife

Despite my best efforts, I came up short on the deal, as I learned today. I continued to try to follow up with him after having taken him out the last time to see what was going on.  He finally called me back today to basically tell me that he has found a home he can move in to as a rental by the end of the month. 

I was very happy for him, as I am for all my clients, when I either help them find what they are looking for or they wind up finding it themselves and take the time to give me a courtesy call to advise me that they have met their real estate needs.

What really made my day was that he also took the time to tell me how much he appreciated all I had done for him.  He was grateful for how truly I cared for him and the effort I put forth in diligently working to find a solution to his need and meet his deadline.  He was amazed at the dedication and devotion I showed in working towards successfully meeting his needed deadline, considering they did not know me until we began to work on his real estate needs.

I've got to tell you, that this means more to me than anything.  Having clients come back to me telling me that they were really glad to have worked with me, despite the outcome.  That just brightens my day as we, as realtors, don't really hear that too often.

He made me smile ALL day today. You truly do reap what you sow.  And all it took was ME BEING MYSELF and putting their needs ahead of mine


This is truly a service business and this is how we need to conduct our business. 


Take it from someone who has experienced the benefits of working this way.  It is well worth your while.  You may not see IMMEDIATE RESULTS, but you will see appreciation and satisfaction expressed from your clientele. They will never forget you for the way you have treated them through their ordeals.  

It doesn't ALWAYS happen which is waybut when compliments do come my way, they brighten my entire day.

So many people are dealing with financial issues and many are facing major life changes.  We all should do what we can to help them, even if we don't get paid for what we do.  They'll be back when things recover and you'll have a loyal client for life.

Karen, It is so nice to be appreciated. I often wonder if people really get the magnitude of what we give and do so freely and in many cases we are not paid for the services we provide. A simple thank you and kind word of appreciation goes a long way.

Karen, you are so right, knowing that your work and efforts were appreciated, no matter the outcome, is what keeps us going many times.  There are many deals that fall through, so a thank-you really matters.

Doug, you are so right.  People don't forget kindness while they are in trouble.  You're right in that it usually does wind up with them knowing someone else you can help.  It's called Customer Service in the truest sense and that's what we need to do today.

Michelle, referrals are always welcome in our business.  And they mean so much more when you can relate a scenario as to how it all happened.  I had another client that ran me through the wringer a few years back (difficult to handle) but he has come through with not only a referral but a listing for vacant land he has.  You just never know where, when or who is going to come through with the referrals from having worked with you.  It's a great reward.  I agree.

Kathleen, it's the little things that wind up mattering the most.  I agree, a thank you or a kind word go a lot farther in the way it makes us feel and it's free to those that give it but goes a long way with the recipient (us).

Laura, when you know you've done everything you can for those you're working with, you know you can walk away and close the book.  But when those clients take the time to let you know that they appreciated all your efforts, that confirms it and makes it well worth your while.  We don't hear it that often.

Suzanne, thank yous are what it's all about.  It doesn't take much on client's part to do but most of them don't bother.  So the ones that take the time, regardless of whether it works out or not, really mean more and stay with us.  It doesn't take much to make us as realtors feel better about the marketplace and glad we're doing what we're doing.

Brian, yes, we have to love em cuz we don't get many of them.  But I don't really ever expect the compliments.  I think that's why they matter so much to me.
