Why is it that often those who believe they would be the best managers of others -- if they were only given the opportunity ? haven't learned to manage themselves properly? Before you can ever have any hope of managing others effectively, you must first learn to set an example for others to follow. It is simply impossible for you to inspire others to high levels of achievement if you cannot inspire yourself to do the same. Don't make the mistake that many others make by saying, "When they make me a manager, I'll show them I can manage." The first move is yours. You must first prove yourself worthy.
Rich,
Good point. I think they call this the "Peter Principle" which means you are promoted to your level of incompetence. Anyway, I myself am a terrible manager, so I decided long ago to strive for "individual contributor" because managing myself is all I can handle.

You are right on that. Becoming a person that people would love to follow is the first major key and setting examples of good qualities too!
Many people assume management is about being in meetings, talking on the phone, and being able to relax in a nice big chair. What it's really about is taking responsibility for other peoples actions, ensuring the course of a group (not just themselves) is the right one to be on, and assuming the stress that comes with knowing that the success of many people is on your shoulders.
Rich - definitely the Peter principle. people do tend to rise to the level of their incompetence
ps love your background picture
The first move is yours. If you want to be in motion, you must take the first step. Setting an example precedes promotion. Enjoy the day!
