What does your Business Card say about you ?

Business cards are an important way to communicate with each other in today's business world. Whether it is a causal meeting or at a formal networking function your business card, and how you handle the interaction of presenting the card, says a lot about us professionally.

A business card can automatically provide you with a feeling of confidence and importance. It is also an indicator of who you are and what you do. It provides immediate information about your status within an organization and what the organization does. It also tells the person receiving the card who they are dealing with.

Technically, the business card is just an extension of you and your business. It is part of yourself image, in how your represent yourself and your company. Business communication etiquette is extremely important to your success as a professional.

Believe it OR not, There is actually a correct way to distribute a business card. However, there is also a wrong way. The wrong way to distribute a card is to pass it out to anyone and everyone. Giving out your business card is not a contest to see how many business cards you can distribute and collect. The preferred method for distributing your business card is to make sure that the person receiving it will find some value with the information is contains.

Your business card is used for marketing and appearance. Digging around in pockets or a purse and providing a slightly worn card to someone is not proper etiquette. The worst thing you can do is to go out and not have any cards at all.   That is a BIG No No.  I have gone to meetings and events where people actually did not bring their cards or in fact, do not even have business cards.  Also, make it a must to keep your cards in a good looking case or holder.

International card protocol is also important to learn if you are traveling. You should have your information, in your native language, on one side and in the language of the country you are visiting on the other side.

At the very minimum, your card should contain the following information:

 Your name and title

Your company title and complete address

How to get in touch with you including: email, website, telephone

The business card is as important and remember, first impressions are lasting

So distribute your business cards and reap benefits and results of all those cards you have distributed in the upcoming days and year to come !!

Hi, Diane,

My business card is whispering to me.  It says, "Mike, you need a new business card."

Diane - Great job highlighting the right and wrong way to handle business card transactions.  It's the worst when I receive a card from someone after they have looked through several pockets/purses or when they scratch out old info and hand-write new info.

Thanks again!!

Diane, awesome post. I did not know there was a right way or wrong way to hand out your business card. I just revised mine last October before I went to the NARdigras in New Orleans. I designed my own and changed my card dramicatically from the traditional horizontal. I also removed myself from the box and went for the "stop a moment and study the card" approach. So far I have been very pleased with the results. A copy of it can be found on my public blog page, but I wasn't sure if it was correct to add links or graphics to comments. :)

Diane-

Interesting post; I haven't given this a lot of thought.  I know Japanese businessmen have very strict rules about business cards.  I know you're not supposed to keep them in your wallet and the sit on them in your back pocket.  The presentation of business cards is also very formal, presented with 2 hands and "asking" to receive the cards instead of assuming the recipient will take it.

Diane,

Good advice. Not having a card?! It's happened to me once or twice. Now I carry a few extras in my iPhone case. If I'm without that tool, then we really have a problem!

A friend taught me to do something like this:  Pull out your card, and before 'handing it over', engage in a bit more conversation, and then give it to them like it is a special treasure, only shared with a select few. Get eye contact, and address them by name. I don't always remember to do this, and every situation is different, but I sure remember how special I feel when someone does this to me.

P.S. Welcome back to blogging!
