Tsunamis and Cheerios

By

I almost lost my brother on Dec. 26, 2004 when a 9.3 earthquake hit near Sumatra, Indonesia. That quake and resulting Tsunami killed over 230,000 people. My brother was one of the lucky ones.

Tom was living in Patong Beach, Thailand on the island of Phuket (Foo-ket). It was just before 9:00AM, he and his wife were eating breakfast.

They had plans that morning, Tom was going to walk with Chom (rhymes with home) to her hair salon, then he was going to shop for groceries. The grocery was underground, literally a basement.

For some reason, one bowl of Cheerios wasn't enough for Tom that morning. He decided to have another bowl. When they left the house to walk into town, locals were running up their hill screaming BIG WAVE!! BIG WAVE!! My brother and sister-in-law joined the group and ran to higher ground.

Everyone in the grocery store died. The water poured in and trapped them. I didn't hear this story until I went to visit my brother in 2006. I knew he had lost a friend, but I had not known how close he came to dying that day. The way he tells it, a bowl of Cheerios saved his life. Thank you, Cheerios.

Omigosh!  Isn't it amazing the thin threads that move us from one place to another to avoid some things and connect with others!

Oh Cynthia, this story brought a chill to my heart!  I am glad your brother survived.  It is sad thinking of all the stories out there that do not have happy endings such as yours did.  Thanks for sharing this with us.

There are so many stories that go unheard.  Thank you for sharing this one, we need some good news and hope while we hear more and more news out of Japan.

I've always believed we will all go when it is our time.  So I think it just wasn't their time.  I'm happy for your family it wasn't too.  Close calls can make us reset priorities.  My kids being in a car accident did that for me.

Deepak - Cheers for Cheerios. I still eat them and think about that story every time.

Linda - my brother has nine lives. My dad always referred to him as "one lucky guy".

Glenn - I still eat Cheerios as well ... the Costco version. If you are ever around small children, they are rolling all over the place!

Cindy in Indy - yes, Tom still lives there. You know how folks say they are fed up with America and will move to _________ (fill in the blank) if such-and-such happens? Well, he did just that. He now lives in a small town on the same island called Kata Beach. BEAUTIFUL place. I'm planning to go back in March 2012. It will be over 5 years since I have seen him.

Susan - no kidding! When I look at the twisted road I have followed to end up where I am, I am amazed!

Barbara - it brings a chill to me as well. I have been heartbroken watching the devastation in Japan and grateful at the same time that my brother is alive.

Joetta - stories are great, aren't they? I'm very glad this one has a happy ending.

Tammy - yep, discovering your own mortality will definitely help reset priorities. Hope your kids fared well, that is scary to think about!

Cynthia - What a great story and I too am so glad to hear that your brother and his wife are still here.  I am a firm believer of fate and destiny and feel that close calls and near death misses are simply signs of something that just wasn't meant to be.  In other words, just simply not that persons time.

Ted - a whisker is right!

Charles - I'll never forget the phone call that told me he was OK.

Donne - Tom has escaped death more than once. He plunged from a Colorado mountain in a hang gliding accident and broke his neck. Nine lives, that boy.

Cynthia, as you witnessed on your hike through the wilderness of Hawaii, the power of nature is not to be underestimated.  I'm sorry you have to relive the horrors that you faced when your brother faced nature in 2004…

Melinda - yes he has!

Kim - mundane is right! And the result can go either way!

Paul - that hike was pretty scary at times. I have photos of the warning signs we encountered. I'm going to post them one of these days.

Cynthia, what an incredible story. His guardian Angel must have been watching over him that day. And, of course, Cheerios. I've just had a bowl full of them this morning. I will never look at a box of Cheerios in a same way again. I'm happy your brother lived to tell you this story.

I'm sure he didn't tell you because he didn't want you to worry.  You probably would have been shaking in your boots even though you knew he was safe. Close calls like that can really give your life new meaning.

Elizabeth - it seems he always has an angel looking after him ... somebody has to!

Charita - I was shaking in my boots as it was. I had already lost both of my parents in 2004, the mere thought of losing a sibling put me over the top.

I can't even imagine what that was like for the people in Thailand and Japan.  Thank goodness for your brother's guardian angel.  And prayers for those in Japan as they begin to re-build.

Thank you cheerios indeed. wow, it's incredible to think how we are all just a whisker away from losing our lives in some unthinkable catastrophe. Your brother was so fortunate. This latest situation in Japan is also numbing.

CA - I haven't been able to get the Japan disaster out of my mind, so I had to write something in reference to it.

Deborah - I hope we hear many GOOD stories out of Japan, similar to this one.

Malcolm - If the world series had not been playing in San Francisco at the time (SF Giants vs. Oakland A's) there would have been many more bay area folks killed during our last major earthquake. Everyone had left work EARLY to watch the game. The earthquake struck at 5:04PM on a Tuesday. I remember well.

David - disasters like these are not easily forgotten. A lot of the video footage from that day was taken from Patong Beach where my brother lived. It's a hot tourist spot during the Christmas season.
