Pelmeni Day!

By

Russians love to eat, and eat really good food! It is a process, from the planning, to the cooking to the actual eating. It is something to be shared, to be enjoyed, something that takes time.

For a week my husband, Alexei, has been planning to cook pelmeni today with the help of our 3 year old grandson. Now let me say that making pelmeni is no easy task. Pelmeni are a form of dumplings, unleavened dough with a pork and beef filling. You have to roll out the pelmeni into small, thin circles then fill them with the meat filling. Then you have to form them in the perfect shape. I know that it often becomes quite an affair. We have, in the past, had a table full of friends and family making this delectible treat!

Out comes the coveted Russian Cookbook, and no, I can't read a word of it. This is his prize possession, I remember he told me one of the meat recipes began with "get a cow"... etc. Did I say it is old? But the dishes he makes from these worn and yellowed pages are the most delectable, fantastic assaults on the food senses. For those of you lucky enough to have eaten Russian food, you know what I am talking about. Herring under a fur coat, salad Olivier, borscht (I make a mean borscht I have to tell you), blini, aladushki, oh, the list goes on and on and on. But I digress, today was pelmeni day in the Tchernichov household.

Success! Cailan devoured his creation, covered in sour cream. We have enough to enjoy for a day or two, all is right with the world!

Andrea, what a wonderful treasure of a cooking event for youtube. I have never been able to duplicate my grandmother's borscht or potato and spring bean soup. The recipe may have started with.. go get a cow! Your story brought back many of my childhood kitchen memories.

Alexei really should translate the cookbook so you can pass it down to the rest of the family that can't read Russian. How cool. Loved the photos. And sounds like it's an experience of love and joy to get out the Russian cookbook.

Emily, I do make a mean borscht, but it is an all day event. I didn't make it this winter.. shame on me. There is still time though...

Tammy, he is the real cook, LOL. I am just a spectator, except with the borscht.

Margaret, thank you for taking the time to watch it!

Hi Anfrea, your grandson received such a gift today.  Memories that will always be cherished.  You have to do something to translate and keep that cook book for it is a treasure.  What a fun get together!

Dawn, yes, I am sure they are very similar!

Judith, the book is HUGE, LOL. I think I will just let him cook for me, LOL. My grandson loves his Pop, they play every day together. It is a gift for both of them.

Andrea, What wonderful memories.  And it brought back memories for me, too.  Once, I spent nine wonderful days in Russia.  I loved the people and the food.

Sounds great.  My wife is chinese and has a similiar tradition making a type of dumplings using pork, chinese chives and several other ingredients.  Sounds like the wrapper is similiar as well.  These dumplings are called Gyoza in Chinese.

Andrea, What fun they had!  Your grandson is adorable but I had trouble seeing anything more than Grandpa's hands.  Is he camera shy (LOL)!

How fun to share in your wonderful tradition!  Reminds me of the fun I have with my tiny granddaughters up to their elbows in gingerbread house icing, licking their fingers and popping gum drops in their mouths when they think I'm not looking!  Great memories in the making!

It looks so tasty too :) Thanks for sharing Andrea, Loved watching and reading your post :) I remember when Uncle Peter, my brother and I would help him cook a shrimp dinner for when he came to visit from Cape Cod. He was a chief so he taught us well :)

Andrea, it looks like Cailan got the hang of it real quick, maybe a future as a chef? Old world recipes and cooking are truly different as they are made with much love and effort. My wife is an excellent cook, and she will often make the 'family ' meals and invite her brothers to come over and enjoy, just like Mom used to do.

I too came from a family of awesome cooks. My Grandma Pauline was a great one. I lovingly call it good old fashioned peasant food. In a tradition where a lot of meals were cooked slow in the oven in a pot. My oh my would I love to travel back in time to sit at that table again.

Andrea - I attended a military college prep high school and had roommates from different cultures and backgrounds.  One of the coolest things about that is that I would often stay a weekend in their home and was able to share in different traditions, foods and beliefs. I believe that these experiences were the foundation to my understanding and respecting people from all walks of life.  This brought back a memory of me spending a weekend at my friend Cezar's house and got to make an Arabic salad called Tabuli and a potato dumpling filled with meat (much like yours) called Kupahamoh.  Wow was it delicious!  Enjoy it!

Andrea,

One of my e-mail accounts got into trouble, and I did not even know it. I went to fix it today, and I found your e-mail and the link.

Wow, how could I miss it

And, of course, pelmeni... I am on a vegan diet now, and it is a torture watching my son eating pelmeni.

We used to do  them from scratch, but now are cheating. Olga buys precut dough, so we only do the filling. And I have to confide that we often buy frozen ready to go pelmeni in a local Russian Store.

Do you know when you have enough of pelmeni? It is when you are eating the last and sitting on the first (Ivan Andreevich Krylov)
