My way or the Highway?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Melanie Serrato, Rawlings Realty ~Corona, Norco, Eastvale Ca 01205902

HighwayOn a long drive home yesterday, after an open house at our investment property, my husband took an unexpected exit off the freeway.  I asked him where he was heading, and he indicated that he thought the freeway was going to bog down up ahead at the transition to the next freeway we needed to take, so he was taking the back streets.

Well, maybe just that alone doesn't justify a blog posting, but it got me thinking....   You see, my husband doesn't usually take the back streets, it's me who is the back road queen, known in my small circle of friends as the "navigator", because I know all of the short cuts to anywhere you want to go.

Road through the hills

Since we've lived in the Corona / Norco area for more than 15 years, and I've taken the kids to and from school daily for all of that time, plus driven them to sports and other activities, church, and friends houses, I spend a great deal of time on the road.  Throw in the fact that I'm a Norco real estate agent, and am looking at or showing homes in all of the areas I might have missed with the kids, well I know this place like the back of my hand!

So, when traffic is heavy, or I just don't feel like going the "usual" way to get somewhere, I'll take the scenic route, even if it's not necessarily a lot faster.  It just feels better to be driving through a nice neighborhood, or among the hills and trees, instead of the concrete jungle that is the more direct route.

I began to wonder as my husband took his exit off the freeway, and surprised me with his back street adventure, what other people are likely to choose... My way (off the beaten path), or the Highway (the most direct route that most others would take)?

What type are you?

I would probably take the route that is less congested, less stressful.

I am a backstreeter too.  My husband travels the backroads just to see a place he hasn't seen before.  We both love the scenery.

Melanie, I am definitely an off the beaten path person. I have been driving the streets of our city for over 20 years going to people's homes and am the 'go to' person if someone needs to know where something is or how to get there. Yes, I am the person who tells people where to go!... But in a nice way. We are fortunate in our city, being built in a river valley, that many of our roads have lovely views, so even in traffic, it can be a relatively pleasant experience as long as the other drivers are reasonable...

~ Ralph and Rose - Thanks for posting your preferences.  I wonder if we'll get anyone who is more a highway type? Maybe real estate professionals will tend to be back street types just because we're on the road so much through the neighborhoods...

~ Peg - I love the comment about telling people where to go!  Not so sure about other drivers being reasonable, maybe that is a river valley trait?

Since our business model is in the minority on Active Rain, we have to be off the path types.

I'm a highway kind of girl - I want to get where I'm going the shortest and fasted way possible. Most of the time when I get off to go the backroads to avoid traffic, it takes just as long.

~ Rose, thanks for stopping by.  Glad to have a little variety, as we all were back roads types prior to your visit.  You're right, sometimes it does take just as long on the back roads, but I guess my expectations are different, as on the highway, I expect to be driving at highway speeds, and on the side roads, the expectation is different, and I enjoy my trip a little bit more.  Many things in life are all about perspective!

Rose, It depends on the time of the day, but if Ihad my choice, it would be "not" on the highway. It's too gray, smoggy and crowed there. Plus, when you go on to the side street, we can always notice something different and new. Lastly, the side roads are a lot more peaceful. Take care Navigator!

Hey Michael, sorry I missed your post.  Another vote for the back roads... Yeah!
