From the office to church to the dog park, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan have dominated conversations over the last few days. Photos and video showed cars and shipping containers tossed about like children's toys. ESPN ran stories of Japanese baseball players in spring training trying to connect with their homeland. Loss of property and loss of life continue to mount as rescue efforts press on.

Events like these reach easily across geographic and political boundaries as people everywhere ask "What can I do to help?" One of the easiest things is to donate to relief organizations. By texting REDCROSS to 90999, you can send $10 to help Japan. For other amounts, visit www.redcross.org or call 877-410-3373.
MSNBC has published a list of additional organizations on Techoblog in Japan's Earthquake: How to Help. Many of these have $10 text options set up.
And here's one more idea. Take a look at this list of 182 sister cities relationships between Japan and the U.S. This may be a perfect opportunity to connect with your local community and really help others. With ideas, technology and funding, we can really shorten the distance across the Pacific.
