It was almost one of those "walking in on naked people" days!

On Friday, I previewed a great house.  And it had a big old "Open Sunday 1 - 4" rider on the For Sale sign.

It was a Wow House, and I called some favorite buyers to let them know that it was one of a two-house alert.  We met at another house in the neighborhood then headed to Wow House for the Open.

But something was off.  There was a big For Sale sign with no open rider or open arrows in sight.  When I previewed the place, it looked like the sellers had moved, and there was every reason to believe that the listing agent was running a little bit late.  Still, before putting my Sentrilock card into the lockbox, I thought that it might perhaps be a good idea to call.

I dialed the contact number on the listing printout that I thought was the listing agent.  When there was an answer on the other end, I could hear a shower running.  And the person who answered was not the listing agent, but the seller who had just stepped out of the shower.

The seller said to come on in, and to start on the two lower levels before coming upstairs.  So we did.  And while we were there, another woman came by for the Open.

It's really important when we are marketing an occupied home that our showing instructions are clear and unambiguous.  And perhaps we need "Open House Canceled" riders to add to our signs!

No doubt about it.  Having a house for sale while you're living in it is a total invasion of privacy waiting to happen.  And sellers in a shower, or worse, is not the best sort of staging prop.

Wow, this brings back memories.

I had a home inspection where the young female tenant refused to get dressed.

I wrote about it on my blog here last feburary.

you can read more about it here

Good thing you called.  I had a coworker who was showing a home for an out-of-state client.  He was surprised when a woman walked out of the bathroom wrapped only in a towel.  The home was supposed to be unoccupied.  Turned out the owner's down-on-her-luck daughter decided to live in the seasonal home without telling her father.  Opps.

Ussually the people you see naked are not the ones you want to see naked.  When in doubt, call, knock, and yell out.

Even just a note on the door would help. In our market most homes are vacant so we are usually spared this type of thing.

I wonder what he would think if you showed up to show the house in your underwear?

Note to self:  It is always best to call when in doubt AND to announce myself AFTER knocking and ringing the doorbell.  It sounds like a great story....question is, did the buyer like the house?

Hi Pat, Many of us over the years have had something similar or worse happen. Real Estate is not for the faint of heart, LMAO. I am surprised that someone has not gone around the country and compiled a whole book of incidents and situations that have happened while showing a home. It could be a best seller.

In my 26 years I've only caught two people taking showers.

One was hilarious......here we are 5 people traipsing up a set of wood stairs and we were not quiet.  The Dad got to the top and turned around and almost ran all of us over as he raced to the bottom and out the door.  Of course not knowing what he saw or why he was running we were right behind him!

When we discovered why, we couldn't stop laughing!  The woman was in the shower.  I'm just surprised she didn't holler when we made a racket going up the stairs.  Joy

Hey!  Thought I posted reply comments last night, and they've sort of vanished!

Thank you so much for your comments, many of which were much goofier than my post!

We were lucky that I called, and we were lucky that the seller was nice enough to let us come and see the place once she got dressed.

In any case, it's so important to be careful in occupied homes.  Call, ring the bell, knock and yell.

Pat ~ that could have been so embarrassing for the sellers.  But where did the sign rider go?

Unfortunately, I have walked in on naked people.  It's not funny!........until after you quietly leave before they know you were there.  It's obvious the listing agent wasn't very good at picking up his signs.

Well, what I want to know is if your buyers liked the house. Did they decide to buy it, or not?

Well, you did everything you could do for your potential buyer.  To me, it showed you had a motivated seller as well!

It has happened to me, too.  What can you do?  It is one of those career happenings.  If it hasn't happened to you yet, it probably will if you stick around long enough.

Too funny Pat.  We had our office tour one day and walked in on a not prepared seller - also in the shower!

this has happened before! I had a listing that the showing service couldn't get in touch with the seller and had declined the showing, but the agent didn't get the instructions and showed the home anyway. Only to walk in on the seller, getting out of the shower!

It's my worst nightmare.  Every time I go in an occupied house, I'm terrified someone is going to be home in some kind of compromising position.  It's never happened so far, and hopefully it never will.
