So when is it time to throw in the towel when it comes to your computer? I have had people ask me this question and quite honestly there is no set answer. The shelf life of a computer can range anywhere from 2 years to 10 years depending on what you use it for, how well you take care of it and how powerful it was when you got it. I have an acquaintance who has had his current PC since 2001. That is probably the exception to the rule. My son on the hand is lucky if he can get 2 years out of a machine. He doesn’t exactly take great care of them. Myself? I’m probably somewhere in between more because I like to keep up with the current technology than anything else. I generally get a good 4-5 years out of a machine before I upgrade or replace. There are certainly things you can do to stretch the life of your PC. Run regular defrags, clean up the hard drive and registry, keep a good anti-virus running at all times, cut down on clutter, etc. Just general good housekeeping so to speak will keep your machine running well for a good amount of time. If you have come to the point where you want to rip your hair out, bang your head on the keyboard, or throw the computer out the window, then it is probably time for a new machine. :)
Mine usually lasts for about 3-4 years but I want to purchase an Apple however our MLS does not support the machine. I understand there is software so I can use it with the current settings but that defeats the purpose. Sorry for the rant but come on MLS it is the new century, better hurry before its gone...
It's always nice to get something new. Especially a computer. No head banging for me, but sometimes I see my beard growing as I wait for the screen to change. Rip Van Wrinkle is not for me.
I usually have a computer that will last 2 to 3 years before the hard drive dies. I have learned to get a really good anit-virus software and keep it updated. I have also learned to back up my hard drive more frequently too.

Karen, funny you should bring up this subject. In conversation with my computer guru (aka husband) last night, he mentioned I will need to update my computer soon. I questioned him about this and shared that I thought my computer was fine. He said it was at the end of it's life.
Karen - I am at 5 years with my lap top and it runs great! However, I will be getting something new this year. I need to update old software and I figure a new machine will run it better. I can't wait for my new toy!
Karen, you are so right with your wide range on a computer's potential lifespan, depending on how and what your needs are.
I am nursing mine through year 4 and I know a new one is in the near future!
