I try pretty hard to keep my political views out of my business persona. At times there may be certain events I attend, or friends I may have that might give folks a hint at my own personal beliefs, but I am always very careful as a company and a business person to remain neutral.
Wisconsin is experiencing some pretty strong support for both sides of our budget crisis, the new budget bill that has been passed, and the issue of public employee unions collective bargaining. I respect people for their firm commitment to the issue, no matter which side they are on. But what I do not respect and what I feel is bordering on illegal activity is a new boycott that is going around. There is a group (that shall remain nameless in this blog) that is boycotting anyone that supports a specific side of the argument. I happen to think that this is behavior as a group that seems to resemble a possible antritrust violation by asking large numbers of people to refuse to use certain businesses, which they are naming by name, due to their stance on the issue, or support for people they feel are responsible for the issue.
I take personal offense to think that someone would specifically not use me or my company and to encourage large groups of their cronies to not use me either simply based on a political issue that I as a business person have not specifically supported. I find it hard to believe that they feel I would not give my full attention and put my professional skills to use to work hard for them with their real estate needs just because some politician decided to be on one side of the fence or another. I suppose it is their right to work with me for whatever reason they may choose, and do not have to admit why, but to outright ask large numbers of people not to use me is just downright ignorant, in my opinion.
What is next - refusing to buy a home owned by someone of a specific political party? To refuse to show the home to someone of a viewpoint other than your own? Seems to me this behavior needs to be monitored and the guilty parties told to be careful or we might fight back.
