Doggie Spring Fever at Antietam Lake in Reading

buster dog

Before I get into this story, let me just tell you that Buster is our very first dog.  We adopted him from the Humane Society of Berks County last May and he's approximately 5 years old.  It's a long story about his conquered fear of water, but the short of it is- a play date with a Husky mix quickly got him over that fear.

This past Saturday, I was supposed to do a property inspection in Reading, PA on an 8 unit but the Buyer ended up postponing it due to some contract issues.  Since it happened to be a beautiful, sunny day in the mid 50s,  I figured this might be the perfect day to go for a hike with my wife, Tina, and our dog, Buster.

We pile into the car and get to Antietam Lake in Reading in the early afternoon.  There is a trail that goes around the lake and up the mountain that we've always wanted to explore.  Buster was beyond excited, ofwoman with dog on hiking trail course, because what's better than a car ride followed by a hike in the woods?

We start out on the trail and a few minutes into the hike, Tina wants to take Buster off the leash for a little freedom.  He's a very well-trained dog, so she was not concerned.  I didn't think it was a good idea because he might make a run for the lake.  That would mean a mandatory dog bath afterwards.  Tina thought he'd be fine.  He would listen... he always listens.   Besides, the lake was frozen just 2 weeks ago.. what crazy dog would want to go for a swim in 40 degree water!?  Little did we know Buster had Doggie Spring Fever

dog running toward lakeRight after removing his leash, he makes a run for the lake.  No problem!  Tina confidently calls him and he comes back to us.  30 seconds later, Buster makes a run for the lake again, we call him, and he returns.  A 3rd time, he makes a run for the lake, we call him, he ignores us.  Yup.

He didn't care that the water was 40 degrees.  He didn't care about the cheese bones in my hands or the sound of disappointment in mommy's futile commands.  He was going for a swim! Dog swimmingSince he's still learning to doggie paddle, it's a very awkward swim and we couldn't help but break out in laughter.  So he swam for a good 20 minutes, got muddied up on the way to the car, and headed for a car ride to the doggie wash!

Who knew Doggie Spring Fever would take over at Antietam Lake in Reading, PA?  So what's the morale of the story?  Dogs, even well-behaved dogs, do the darnedest things!

He looks like a big lab who adores water and comes well equipped with webbed feet.  Buster looks like he had a great time and I understand that the lake water was just too much temptation no matter how well he listens -- generally.

I know Antietam Lake in Reading well as I grew up in a small town right outside of Reading.  I went to school in Shillington at Governor Mifflin and loved the roller rink in Sinking Spring and the summer outings on the grounds of the rink.  I suspect the skating rink has been long, long gone!

Sue- what a small world!!!  I've only been in this area several years and I don't know if there is still a skating rink in Sinking Spring, but I'll have to check around.

Oh, and we adopted him as a "black lab mix" and it turns out he has NO LAB in him at all (took a DNA test to find this out).  He's 75% Rottweiler and the rest is Golden Retriever and English Setter.

David, I have a dog so I understand what bad listeners they can be. I can also understand their spring fever - being cooped up inside a house most of the winter is no fun, even for humans.

I help occasionally with an dog adoption events organized by a local shelter - every dog is labeled as a lab mix. Perhaps because everyone knows labs are big cuddly bears and make great family dogs. Sounds like Buster inherited some good genes from his Rottweiler, Retriever, and Setter ancestors. Have a great day!

Elizabeth,

Yes, after I saw every dog at the shelter pretty much was a "lab mix", we opted for the DNA test because we hope to have several happy years with him and wanted to know about his potential health issues and what behavioral traits he might have.  Shelters do the best job they can.  Buster was saved from another shelter that was going to put him down.  Apparently, black dogs have trouble getting adopted because they look more aggressive than the lighter ones.  Too bad!  At least we saved this guy.

David,  Buster is enjoying his freedom and having a grand old time!  Hecertainly found the right home.

Yes, I too, am an animal lover.  My dogs are another story.  They dislike the water.  We had a pool and we took them in once.  After that, they steered clear of it any time we were outside.

David, great looking pup, and glad to hear you are experiencing springtime weather, as your winter was pretty harsh!

Doggie spring fever evidently is cured by a cold swim. Thanks for sharing the story.

Glad to see that you were visiting Maryland and the county that has a record number of foreclosures. Investors are building their rental portfolios while prices are low and lenders are under pressure to reduce their REO inventory.

Blooming for home buyers this spring!

Elyse- the good thing about that is you don't have to worry about swimming pool accidents and unexpected dog baths!

Joan- thanks.  I'm having spring fever myself.  I haven't had the inclination to go swimming though.

Roy- the smart investors are out there now.  My wife and I are in the process of completely a deal more local to where we live.  The deals are everywhere!

David, I love it!!  I have two Australian Shepherds, one being a rescue.  The rescue is petrified of water and our other has loved it since she was a puppy.  It is next to impossible to keep her out of the water.   We bought her a rigid wading pool for the summer just to play in.  She loves to take her balls and some stones and drop them in the water and then sticks her head under the water to find them.  She can spend hours doing this.

Your Buster looks like he has accepted your and your wife 100% -  he knew he was safe in that water because you were with him!  May you have many many more years together!

David, I got such a kick out of this story!  Buster is so cute handsome.  We've always had water dogs and no amount of training. calling, begging or bribing seems to keep them out of the water! Happy Spring to you!

Yes, a few of these pictures came from a fellow dog-loving friend, Jaron Horst!  He knows just how to capture the moment- even the comedy and emotions of a crazy dog!
