I just discovered my DREAM job! I want an office job working for the United States government!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Are the taxpayers getting what they are paying for?If there is one thing that I have learned over the last few weeks, it is that there are jobs out there for people that want a paycheck, but don’t really want to do anything.

Those office people work for the United States of America. They get a paycheck, a title, and a phone number and apparently their responsibility ends there.

Over the last few weeks I have attempted to contact over twenty bureaucrats and not one answered the phone. Not surprisingly, not one even bothered to return my call after I left a voicemail.

I can’t even imagine not answering my phone or returning calls.

But of course, MY paycheck depends on me actually doing something.

Richard, you missed out...to late now you have to work for a living answering e-mail, (within 15 minutes) answering voice mails generally within 30 min...Do not take lunch and work after dinner:)))

Richard I agree with you 1000%, Trying to find one of them is inpossuible and if you did find one it would be a bunch of worthless BS they threw at you. They probably are all in hiding ( and should be ) because of the state this country is in, It has gone straight down the toilet ( pass the ri-dex ) Its a shame that we are dealt this turmoil. But nothing is forever  it cant get any worse. so there could be a light somewhere hopefully.

Richard....isn't it disgusting.....it's not what you know, it's who you know....the person who should have returned your call was probably playing golf with the person who placed him in his current position.....isn't nepotism wonderful???

They surely don't communicate with folks whose money they are sitting on.

I've had a $7,000 tax overpayment due since last October.  They don't speak.  They don't respond to the number they give you on the form.  They just don't care.

But, they collect their pay every two week, I bet.

Richard, I find this ends up being a case of you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. I was trying to figure out the ruling on cutting a downed tree in the shoreline protection zone. If they don't call back and I do it, I'll get fined If I wait...there could be a serious danger to the public...What to do -what to do?

Richard, with your luck when you get the job, they'll institute a 15 minute rule for returning all phone calls and emails.

And, don't forget the double-dipping. Just retire, draw a pension AND then take another job! There's no doubt that most politicians have forgotten they were elected to represent OUR best interests, not theirs.

Okay, so why are you calling.....Now I am just being nosy:)  It is a ridiculous situation that a return call doesn't happen, don't they have secretaries, assistants, interns....

Boy oh Boy did you hit the nail on the head. Why is it that so many hardworking Americans know this for a fact but it does not change, it never changes. And they wonder why we are in the shape we are in. Great Post. So true!

Preach on Richard!  What would we get done if we had to take a 15 minute break every 3 hours and a required 1 hour lunch.  What if there were clients waiting to see us and we said, "Sorry, I'm on break right now"... what a joke!  If I was the head of the governing body, I'd put everyone on commission!

Richard,

Over the last several year, government work has been the fastest growing segment of the economy.  Seems you will have plenty of competition for the position.

A steady paycheck may sound inviting but don't be fooled! The rules most government employees are forced to operate under are frustrating to say the least. I imagine they don't answer their phones for the reason Steve (#5) mentioned - damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Hi Richard...Guess someone needs to be the dissenter and I don't mind it being me.  I don't know who you were calling nor why but having been married to a government employee I know some of them work and work darn hard.  If many didn't we wouldn't have the country we do.  Private business doesn't do it alone.

Our military all all government employees as are many other vital personnel.  I worked for the American Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia and I know for a fact folks took their responsibilities seriously and worked hard to accomplish their mission.

If I think I'm working hard all I have to do is take a look at Hillary Clinton's schedule.  Just the traveling, without any of the meetings, would knock me out.

Someone mentioned it's who you know that gets you the help.  That seems to be the truth in every area of our lives whether we are looking for a job in the private sector and trying to get help from a government worker.

I'm hoping someone gets back to you quickly but even if they don't a lot of work is getting done.

Kate

Richard, After my Navy time I didn't have too many job criteria other than NOT working for the government, automotive industries or DOD contractors.  J&J turned out to be a pretty good fit! :)  Bill

I have talked with folks who work at the US Border in Houlton ME, in the post office and those government jobs not all that much fun if you get the wrong crew, like any where. Vilifying state and federal workers to cut the budget makes many a target too. There are many that work in government jobs that are super cost conscious, little red hen efficient. It's like real estate, the funeral industry, car makers, there are good and there are lazy in any profession. The kick them upstairs, make them a manager because they helped me get elected government officials are not always the fastest pony in the barn but they do have political horse sense.

Hi Richard. It's funny you wrote about this. I just sent an email to a politician and I did not even get a response. Not even a generic auto-response. Very annoying.

Amen Richard!  I saw this quote yesterday and then looked at the date....I am not saying this in regards to the current president :), but merely as a quote that was written years ago....

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
