I toyed with a tantalizing title to get you excited, but less is more sometimes.

It has happened.  Facebook usage has exceeded email.  A recent study found that people spend about 4.6 hours per week on Facebook compared with 4.3 hours on email.  Why?  Think of Facebook as being email on steroids and then shoved in the microwave.  You get a bunch of information with images, links and conversations in a tiny package and you get it instantaneously.

Now overall, email is still king with 73% of people using it regularly as compared to 46% of people using Facebook.

Facebook is in your face with its messages while eMail is more like putting a post it note on a computer as you walk by and hope somebody sees it.

Facebook is a great for quick communication while email is great for persistent communication.  Both have their place, but Facebook is rapidly surpassing email as the preferred method of communication.

Chris, This is a great post.  Facebook is building steam and attracting more useage.  I think email will still be around for a while if not the long term for one reason specifically.

It's very difficult to have a lengthy conversation on Facebook about a specific issue without getting into details!  And "details" are the specifics that should be discussed in PRIVATE!  Which Facebook is not.  That is why I think E-Mail will continue to be usefull.

There are some people who will send messages on Facebook rather than send an email, so there is some Facebook replacing email but overall most people will continue to send private or detailed messages via email.

Facebook still amazes me!  I learned typing in high school now it's all about social networking, twittering, etc.  The world has opened up and my eyes are wide open!
