High School Basketball, the end of an era...for this Mom

Sam Sophomore SHS #25The very first blog I wrote on ActiveRain was in January of 2009.  I had been reading blogs for awhile but never felt motivated to write one as nothing excited me to do so.  Then, I went to my son's basketball game and knew I had to write about it. The photo to the left is from his sophomore year #15.

My First Active Rain Blog - How are Basketball and Real Estate Similar - the lesson my son taught me.

Since that time, I have written many blogs.  I am certainly not a regular contributor but try to do at least 2 a month.  Some months, I am a bit more inspired.

That sophomore son I wrote about just finished his last game of his high school career.  He will be graduating in June.  I still don't know which university he'll end up at, but I know I will miss him.  Sam was dubbed the "Silent Leader" of his team.  He was a team captain.  I will miss driving for hours to the games during snowstorms.  I'll miss the joy of seeing well executed plays.  I'll miss the comradely of the team and the innocence of the players.  Yeah, I know, it's called the circle of life....

One of the moreHannah McNulty Stowe High School Basketball interesting events of this year's season was the addition of a female senior to the boys varsity lineup.  Hannah McNulty joined the boys in a bit of controversy.  The girl's team did not have enough players to continue and Hannah was working on a basketball scholarship.  She joined the boys team even though many did not make her feel welcome.  The good news was that she's a hell of a player.  She is aggressive and added a spark to the team.  The boys soon took her in as this girl can pass, catch and score - better than most of the team.  She eventually made the starting lineup and became a valuable member of the team.  This fact caught the attention of the news media from the local Stowe Reporter to Burlington's WCAX news and then USA today.   She received a scholarship from Suffolk University in Virgina.   You go girl!!!

Sam Merelman #15 SHS Boys VarsityThroughout the basketball season, I took photos and videos.  I don't think I will ever be good a photographing basketball.  The light is always bad and the subjects keep moving - imagine that!  But I somehow managed to get enough that weren't too blurry.  Then I added video clips and came up with the slide show below.  I really like it.  By the way, my son is number 15 and I am very proud of him!

It goes by so fast. It seems like my son in college should still be playing ball in jr. high.

congratulations, Teresa =)

there'll always be college basketball and he might be granted scholarship as well.

My son is still 3years old, but I'm also hoping that he'll grow up liking (if not loving) sports =)

wishing you all the best as your son leaves the "nest" and try the world on his own.

Billi - you are so right.  At times it seems like they will never be old enough to be on their own and before you know it, they are driving....

James - I am so glad Sam loves sports.  He's always either played basketball, baseball or skied.  He's not really scholarship material - I wish he was believe me.  Thanks and I also hope your son or daughter grow up to love sports!

Teresa,  I missed this great story in the paper in Stowe.  I'm going to be sure to pass it along to my rising 9th grade basketball daughter.  She lives bball and has scrimmaged with the boys team a few times, but I can't imagine watching her play for the boys.  She even looked at Stowe High school and we talked about her going there....but the bball program would have been a major negative for her.   Our oldest starts at UVM in August and is very excited about it!
