Sharon and Bruce Walter homes for sale in Lafayette, West Lafayette, Battle Ground, Tippecanoe County, Indiana at Keller Williams Realty

This is the site where THE PROPHET(half brother to Tecumseh) directed the Native American forces in their attack upon the encamped militia and army forces led by William Henry Harrison in the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Prophet's Rock is an easy 10 minute hike from the Tippecanoe Battlefield and Museum in Battle Ground, Indiana(just 10 minutes north of Lafayette by car).  Be careful if you actually climb up to the rock and cave formation as it is very steep and can be quite slippery if the ground is damp.

This is the bicentennial year of The Battle of Tippecanoe; it was fought on November 7, 1811.

Gwen:    There was a slight earthquake about 170 miles from us a couple of years ago across the border in southern Illinois.  I could feel the floor shake, and that was quite scary.  I can't even begin to imagine the terror that the Japanese people have gone through.

Robert:   Prophet's Rock is located just outside of Battle Ground, Indiana.  It is the site where The Prophet(half-brother to Tecumseh) directed Native American forces to attack General William Henry Harrison's forces in what became known as The Battle of Tippecanoe on November 7, 1811.

Many historians consider this the opening shot of the War of 1812 with Great Britain.  Harrison would later use the fame of this military victory and campaign slogan( TIPPECANOE and Tyler, Too!) to win the presidential election of 1840.

Thanks for the photo and the history lesson on Prophet's Rock. I hadn't realized that the battle of 1812 had included land as far west as Indiana.

Joyce, it was actually the front lines for people living west of the Appalachian Mts.  The "War Hawks" had great support in Congress for a declaration of war on Great Britain from people living in the Northwest Territory as they viewed the British as the instigators for the Native American unrest and attacks upon the frontiersmen.  The British operated out of Canada, and a smaller US presence in the area would protect the British fur trade monopoly they had going with the Native Americans in the region.

Thanks for your visit today, Joyce!

Bruce and Sharon - There are some places on the earth, that appear almost wise.  That's one of 'em.  It also feels like there could be a snake or two in there:-)

Myrl, The Prophet should have soaked up some of that wisdom and delayed his attack against Harrison.  He was NOT the leader that Tecumseh was!  Tecumseh was out visiting other Indian nations trying to form his Indian Confederacy against the intrusion by the people of the United States.  The Prophet's premature attack led to the destruction of Indian settlements in the area and a military victory for William Henry Harrison.

Hi Bruce and Sharon, Prophet's Rock's history seems very sad - and I'm with Myrl on the snake thing.

Hi Mary!  I agree with you about the sadness involved in the clash of different cultures, as you well know from your state's history.  I really think that Tecumseh was one of the twenty greatest leaders who ever lived on this continent!

It is a perfect place for a snake to sun itself or seek shelter!

Sharon & Bruce:  Lots of history going on here.  I just saw your post on the Tippecanoe Memorial.  One of the comments mentions "Native American's unrest."  Ummm... this was historically the last of those "Native Americans"... was it not ?                             August 19, 2012

One can never be proud to be an American while knowing what we really did back then. It is shameful and continues today.

Karen, the Battle of Tippecanoe did have a large impact on the further settlement of land by Anglos at the expense of the Native Americans.  We have a section of The Trail of Tears where Native Americans were forcibly removed from Northern Indiana in the 1830's.

Senior Panther, there is an excellent interpretative museum at the Tippecanoe Battlefield Park in Battle Ground that tells the story in an honest and open way.  Tecumseh was one of the greatest leaders on this continent in the ninteenth century.  I have been to many of the reservations in the Southwest and have seen poverty and wealth and efficient management of US government funds and absolute corruption.  A major problem is that Native Amercian land is held in trust and it is almost impossible for a Native American to get a mortgage on a house because banks don't want to lend in that type of situation.  This needs to be changed and would go a long way to helping solve the inadequate and poor housing situtation on most of the reservations.
