Kitchen Design Trends

The kitchen is one of the most popular rooms in a house and, for many families, it's the center of attention. Home builders in Aiken, SC, understand this and are responding with plans that make a kitchen functional and beautiful.

If you are building a new home, it's important to begin with the basics in kitchen design. Consider your lifestyle, the size of your family (now and in the future), and how many people will be in the kitchen at the same time. Ask your home builder to include these items in your new home.

Today's kitchen has more appliances, more work stations, and often multiple cooks. Some of the trends you'll see in new homes include:

• Walkway clearances of at least 48" to allow adequate passing space when more than one cook is in the kitchen.

• Expanded countertop space to accommodate multiple cooks.

• Varied countertop heights, such as raised counters for taller cooks and dropped counters for shorter users (including children and wheel-chair bound cooks). A dropped countertop also works well as a baking area.

• A work island to provide a separate workspace that allows cooks to see each other and work together without getting in each other's way.

• A second sink, smaller than the primary sink, which can be used for food preparation and to assist in clean-up.

• Casual eating areas that are not separate but rather integrated into the kitchen itself, making the room function much like a family room where the entire family can spend comfortable time.

• A desk area with space for a computer and internet access.

With the basic design in place, you can take your time customizing the kitchen in your new home with flooring, wall coverings, and other décor features after you move in.

Ok, now that I have read the post I feel better.  When I see trends, I always get scared.  I always feel like I am behind the curve.

I like the idea of the kitchen trend you describe.  I grew up in a home, quite a few years back, where our living/kitchen/eating space was about like you describe.  Without all the technology of course.  Our kitchen space was huge and where we basically lived and spent our time inside.  The front room was only for when company came and the parlor had some comfy chairs for watching our 6" TV (really!) and where the 3-party phone sat.  So, some aspects of the "new" is actually "retro", to me anyway.

It  seems that the kitchen is the heart of the home, even when we have a party everyone seems to be in the kitchen..... are living rooms obsolete?
