News media reported this morning that at approximately 8:40 this morning a natural gas line exploded in Minneapolis at 60th Street and Nicollet Avenue South.  Initial reports stated huge fire, approximately 30-40 feet high, and clouds of smoke.

Residents and businesses in Minneapolis and Richfield, around the area of highways 35W and 62 were evacuated for about 2 hours until the situation was under control.  They were all allowed back around 10:45 am.

Sad. It seems that the gas line infrastructure is aging. This used to be a rare thing. Think thats 3 or 4 in the last 12 months!

More opinions than you want to hear about.

From the available pipeline maps, it looks like that is the location of a major transmission line that runs from north of Minneapolis to the Minnesota River and beyond.  It looks like the line turns a corner and intersects with another short line that runs west at the point of the explosion.  It is surprising that it took an hour to shut down the line.

Vickie - CenterPoint seems to do a decent job keeping an eye on their lines.  I'm sure an in-depth investigation of the cause with follow.

Mike - They shut down gas to the pipe and allowed remaining gas burn off.  It must be a large diameter line, you confim that in your description.
