Building or Buying A Home Should Be Fun

new homes signWhen I ran my own homebuilding company—following a couple of unpleasant experiences—I developed a rule that I would only build or remodel for “nice” people.  Building or buying a home should be fun, and it can be if the right choices are made up front.  Having previously spent more than a decade working in the corporate world of residential construction, I came to realize that life is truly too short to add to the frustrations by taking work solely for monetary gain.  And later, after establishing my company, I expanded my rule by adding that my projects should be enjoyable, both for me as contractor and for my customers.

Building or buying a home should be fun; and it’s also an exciting time.  And while I’ve often heard comments about how stressful or unpleasant the process can be, I think it’s because the consumer and contractor or real estate agent have paired up with the wrong people.  After developing my rule, I declined several potentially lucrative jobs when it became evident that the enjoyable aspect would be lacking.  And I really didn’t want potential customers to suffer unnecessarily either.  When we encounter people with whom we don’t resonate, we need to move on.  The process should always be a win/win for both parties.

While I understand that relocating, qualifying for a mortgage or making the selections and decisions necessary for a new home can sometimes be frustrating, they should ultimately be leading to a positive outcome.  Selecting the right team is as critical, in some cases more so, than the selection of the home itself.

Some of my closest relationships are with previous customers; and I believe that to be the case because we both took time to analyze the potential outcome.  We came together in a partnership, describing our expectations up front and making a commitment to help each other achieve our objectives.

In today’s demanding economic climate, with the difficulties we face as a nation and individually, let’s not compound the stress by choosing the wrong partner to help us achieve our housing goals.  Building or buying a home should be fun, and working with qualified and compatible teammates can help to insure that we enjoy the process.

John... I agree with you.  For the years that I sold as an on-site builder rep... gee... when you build a home from the ground up for a pair of really grouchy buyers... hard to get along with, impossible to please... what an ordeal that can be.  And at the end, it's driven everybody crazy... and they're probably STILL not pleased.

If building the home has been such a horrible ordeal, just think what years of dealing with complaints and customer service will be like.  Yikes !  So... no.  Grouchy folks can go somewhere else.

John...this is an interesting aspect that many don't or won't admit to having;  Sal has had the experiences with new-home builder clients.  He was not in the position to turn clients away, but at times the happenings were very interesting to say the least.
Since we are selling our personal home--I have made the decision that 'if they come inside [we will stay until the Realtor[R] and their client show up] with a sneer, snide comments, spoken demands to 'change, change change this & that', or negative comments on design choices-that if my glare does not melt them immediately, then the hex that will be put on them will take effect once they leave the home.  LOL  Probably not an effective method of working-with buyers, but Oh did that feel good just thinking of & typing the words.  My other decision deals with 'kids-gone-wild'--boy did we see those at some of the new home models.  Still working out the procedures for kids on premises--leashes come to mind.  Yikes, aren't I a bundle of joy today.
Have a good weekend.

Yes, John.  Wise words of wisdom, gleaned from years of experience.  Years, and years, and years, and more years, and even more years.  You might even be older than I am.  Wow !  < silly smile >

John,

That makes sense. I only work with people I like. If I don't then I move on. Some people are too difficult.

Karen Anne - Having dealt with those difficult customers, both with a major homebuilder and through my own company, I decided long ago that it wasn't worth the effort.  Homebuilding can be fun from both sides of the process, and if it isn't you've paired with the wrong person or company.  And yes, I probably am older than you.

Barb - Yes, I've had experiences with the "kids gone wild" too.  Not fun.

Jay - It's much better just to say, "Perhaps this isn't going to work."

Bill - Many . . . many years : )

Brian - And both you and the potential client are better off.

John... I turned 67 about six weeks ago... born in 1944.  So I am guessing we are probably pretty close in age.
