We Celebrated Fat Tuesday in New Orleans this year!dragon at mardi gras, march 2011.jpg

This has been on my list of things to do since I was about 18.  We spent months planning the trip - where we wanted to stay - close to everything, but not in the middle of what I expected to be chaos.
It was sensational!  7 nights, many parades, a jillion beads, the best food and so many friendly local people.

We enjoyed a dining experience at Emerils Delmonico on St. Charles one night and then walked outside to enjoy the parades with the locals.  Beakfast at Brennons was a treat too, not to mention Aligator Cheesecake at Jacque Imo's another night.

The city is vibrant and the architecture is beautiful.  I can absolutely understand why people are so passionate about living here.

I didn't personally see any evidence of Katrina or the oil spill - but then we didn't go to the 9th Ward either.

We did take a drive to The Gulf Shores in Alabama to check out a fishing boat and meet friends from Florida.  White sandy beaches!  We took the boat out in the inter coastal for about an hour - we saw no evidence of the oil spill, which surprised me after what I have read and heard in the media.

Happy first day of Spring, All!!

Julie

Julie....I hear that these are crazy times.  I'd love to go prior to Mardi Gras one year.

Hi Larry, Yes, that is exactly what I expected too.  In fact this year Mardi Gras fell on the same time as Spring Break in many places.  Bourbon Street (about 4 blocks on one street) was a mess of people-wall to wall - and was mostly the spring break type folks, young & drunk.  The parades run mostly off St. Charles and the rest of the city atmosphere was more family oriented.  Its just an awesome time and I highly recommend it.

Hi Julie,

I've only been there twice and loved it! Once pre Katrina and once post Katrina. As of last January there were quite a lot of homes still not fixed in some areas. That is where I fell in love with front porches that wrap around and wonder why out west we hardly have front porches. What's next on your list?

Hi Judi, I love the homes with wrap around porches too.  Next on my list is a hot air balloon ride in May out of Snohomish, Washington.  This is a slight modification from the original location of Ireland or Scotland...  <grinning>  However, I still intend on making that trip - just can't do it this year.

What's next for you?

Julie,

We're actually considering moving to the south. I fell in love with it. For the short term goals I just got a rescue doggy! He is part dashound, terrier and/or basset hound. He ought to keep me occupied and out of trouble for a while.
