Bobby Knight says: "Dumb Loses More Games than Smart Wins."

dunceI heard this quote over the weekend following #1 seed Pittsburgh's loss to #8 seeded Butler. ( Butler, BTW, of the infamous Killer B's).  Basically a dumb play was made by a smart player.

I thought this made a lot of sense.  This would make a nice blog topic... maybe even post it in the Motivational Mondays group.

But as I began to write... I couldn't quite get it together in my head.  What the H__ is he saying?  I mean I know what he meant when he said it but now that I try to write a little ole post about it... I'm not sure how to relate it to life.

Does it mean that no matter how smart you are and how smart you play... it's the one dumb move that someone will make that will lose the game?

So I think winning the game is as much about not making the dumb moves as it is playing it smart.

winner

It takes just that one dumb move... take your eye off the target just once.... lose your  focus in what you're doing.... forget to follow through and  You could lose the game.

Think about this as you go through your week.
What do you think it means??

As an IU grad, I am a big Bobby Knight fan and have always appeciated how he doesn't hold back. As it relays to sports, sometimes the consistent teams just wait for others to make a mistake and capitalize on it.

Tammie- I wonder how many Sellers are slapping themselves in the head for turning down the first offer!

Brian- I think our parents probably drummed that into our heads when we were younger but there are "dumb" mistakes we've all made that you just can't take back!

Evelyn- you've got it..   We do the best we can and "dumb" can do more harm than "smart".

Eko- it's such a simple quote but it really had an impact.  You said it right when you said "focus".

Hi Tony and Darcy- letting the "lazys" set in can cost us, right!

Tom- you gotta love the man.  He and Dickie V. make it fun to listen to basketball!

#28- (sorry, couldn't see your name)- He really does love the sport and cares about the kids.  I saw my bracket collapse because of unnecessary fouls and just losing focus.

Michael J- I'm always amazed at the cool the commentators can keep when they're calling a game.  And every so often someone loses it.  Stress can cause us to do some unlikely things.

Hey Fernando- glad to give you the kick but I bet you really didn't need it.  You have a point.. inaction can be just as "dumb".

BARFF- thank you!  Focus definitely is the key and I hope the rest of my bracket that hasn't fallen will focus this weekend.

Chris- too funny and LMAO.  How about this one: "When are you due?"  Oops.

Bruce- I remember those antics and don't have to Google it.  He was well known for getting into trouble.  We can all grown and learn, I hope.  I turned to being a B. Knight fan when I heard an interview he gave about all of the games and the late hours they were on.  He asked how the players were supposed to get their rest and also get their studies in.

Al and Peggy- thank you and welcomed words coming from you.  When I first heard it it made total sense but for some reason my head and words weren't coming together!

Mike- oh good old Pride... doesn't it go before the fall!

Aaron- I think what happens for many of us is that we don't think or get what I call LB (lazy brain).

Kevin- this is a "gotta have it now" world where, unfortunately, you may not often get a second chance.

Michael- how many times have we slapped ourselves for a dumb move, whether playing with fake money as in Monopoly or real as in Real Estate!

Andrew- looks like you've got all of the details nailed down.  Focusing on those will help prevent the "dumb" moves!.

Janice- thanks... taking your eye off the ball... it may come back to hit you, right?

J.Philip- oh yes, I'm old enough to remember that one!  (and others)  Wonder what he says about those!

Chris- I like your take on it.. they only are dumb if we don't learn from them or repeat them.

Don & Amy- You have to like his enthusiasm for the game and for the students.  Yes, some of the teams can play their game and just wait for their opponent to make the "dumb" mistake!

Good thoughts, still thinking, dumb move and dumber moves should be avoided at ALL cost. "Only make the same dumb move once"..;-) DO "think about that some more", WHILE thinking is one way to avoid dumb move(s) since one is not "moving" when one is "thinking"?! Have a geeky Tuesday. That was a 'DO - WHILE' loop in one of the computer languages. Just being me and myself today.

Hi Kathy,  I saw that game ( hoping Butler would win ! ) and was amazed at both last second fouls !  It was like neither team wanted the win !  Any mistake in a well prepared gameplan stands out like a flashing neon sign !

Irene- loved following your geeky Tuesday thinking.  What's on store for Wednesday?

Bill- Sadly I watched it as well... watched as my bracket began to crumble.  You're right... who wanted to win/lose more??  They're mistakes that these teams practice all the time... what to do in the remaining seconds... when to foul and when not!

Joshua- Thanks, Joshua... on occasion the old dendrites kick in and I can make some sense.

Mistakes are allowed, we just need to find a way to recover.  It becomes dumb when we keep having the same issue over and over again....ie scrambling to get the inspection done when we are the ones that wrote the timeframe in the contract!  Staying ahead of the game, anticipating your next move and theirs, and you will be well on your way to a win!

That's not even Bobby Knights most famous saying Kathy (although we have heard it a few times before your post as Jeff is an IU grad and was on campus when the Hoosiers were national champs. I have Purdue roots - in IN that's called House Divided during basketball season anyway LOL - that's why we have season tickets to Valpo (our hometown team and one we can both cheer for) - also a Horizon league team like Butler - Go Dawgs - we want to see a horizon league team win :)

anyway here is a Bobby Knight quote more famous than the one you posted :)

"When my time on earth is gone, and my activities here are passed, I want they bury me upside down, and my critics can kiss my ass!"

Kathy, VERY WELL WRITTEN! I loved it. It's amazing what one dumb move can do to your life, your transaction, or just your day.

On a serious note, I was at Villanova in the 1980's when Knight's Indiana teams were winning Big 10 and NCAA championships. He was ferociously committed to winning. While I would not want him hosting an open house and listening to dumb questions, the man knew how to win.

Karen- from what a lot of people have said it's a lot about not repeating "dumb" mistakes, right!

Jeff & Grace- LMAO... I love that one... and I think I did hear it some time ago!  We are somewhat of a house divided here:  my husband's a KU(Jayhawk) grad and since I'm from Texas I root for any Texas team.  Since they're both in the Big 12, we are often at odds.

Connie- I guess I have you to thank for this blog addiction I now have!! Thank you for your kind words.  Yes, just one dumb move and if we're lucky all we lose is a game.

JP- You're right about that... I admire his dedication to the sport and devotion to his players but I don't think I'd want to set him off... especially with any chairs around!

Kathy, I love the quote and especially the timeliness of it. What I get out of the quote, in light of competition and winning vs losing is this: We are expected to execute "smart", we wouldn't be at the table if our reputation and our execution was known for "dumb". When we end up with "dumb" results, we are more likely to lose. When our results are "smart" we are doing what we are suppose to do.

Steve- I think that's very well put.  We have to focus on the smart moves we make whether in work, life or just playing a game.  But we can't lose focus and go "dumb" either.

Grace- you should be here now... it's absolutely gorgeous!!! Call next time you're in the area and I'll buy the coffee!!!
