As we all know in our business especially these days there are always characters who are willing to spout off unsupported opinions and they are always ready confront your statements no matter how factually supported your statements may be. So this past week I decided to make a point of practicing something that I think has become lost in our culture and that is civility to others, specifically in this weeks case "Sometimes Its Better To Be Nice Than Right".
One simple example where I bit my tongue this week and was nice rather than right was when a friend's wife took me to task about something that was absolutely insignificant to our conversation. She insisted to be right (when she was absolutely factually wrong) and she tried involve me in an argument, I told her I don't remember. The issue in contention didn't matter to me or to the discussion but it obviously mattered to her, so let her think she is right. We all knew she was wrong.
As long as the outcome of Being Nice Rather Than Being Right doesn't cause any harm we might all get along a little bit better if we made it a more common practice.
