Oneness

Is it possible to see the world from outside of our single physically-focused perspective?

birds

Isn’t it amazing that we spend our whole lives inside one single body? We always look out through just one set of eyes, hear through one set of ears, taste with one tongue, and touch with one set of hands. We feel with one set of emotions, move with one pair of legs, and always, always exist in only one single location on this amazing planet.

In every moment there are seven billion other people experiencing the exact same thing: one single perspective… oneness. If any of those senses fail us, we are still within that one perspective. You can never look out and see the world through your daughter’s eyes. You can never taste a meal through your father’s tongue. You can never feel the world through your lover’s emotions. They are all unique, and seemingly completely unavailable to you.

I believe there simply has to be more. There must be a way to feel some of what all humanity feels, learn what all humanity is learning, grow with the unique experiences of all of us on this planet. There must be a part of us that is connected to all others. I believe there are times when we feel it, when it is close and within reach. I think we just don’t easily recognize it when it happens.

When a 44 year old man has angina for the first time in his life, he doesn’t recognize it as heart pain, he feels it more as pain in his arm or jaw. After a while, when his experience grows with the angina, he will recognize the pain as coming from his heart.

It is the same for us with this perspective. If we can recognize the moments when we are connected to another, or to all others, we can practice that and become better at feeling it. We can feel the inspiration of truly seeing from a perspective bigger that one physical being. We can feel the amazing joy of feeling the emotions of others, or the despair of others.

Perhaps it comes when we are experiencing new love. Perhaps it comes when we are in the presence of a newborn baby. Perhaps it comes when we are witnessing someone dying. Perhaps it is through dreaming, or meditation, or prayer. Perhaps it comes when we quiet the mind and allow the heart to be more open, and to be our conduit to the world.

Let’s practice, and see if we can feel it. Let’s move from oneness to “oneness!”

OK, two things, record your voice then play it back through stereo speakers.... it will so NOT sound like you, but everyone else will tell you that is your voice. You hear your voice through bone conduction. Second, walk a mile in another's shoes. You will be a mile away AND you will have his shoes. This is a DEEP one for you on your view of the world Sharon but you are right, we only get one body, one shell to see things with so it is hard to see it from someone else's view.

Well, let me see...I think we can relate to another's emotions- happiness, joy, sorrow, fear- you're right, we can't experience exactly what they are feeling because there is no way for us to know.  Since having grandchildren, I have seen the world through their eyes in a way and children are very vocal about how they see the world :-)  We're all in this together Sharon, I like the idea of "oneness" - we all bleed red.
