Built in 1899, the Frederick Spoke Factory made wooden spokes for carriage wheels - surely you've seen wooden wheeled vehicles in parades!  Early cars still used wooden spokes into the late 1920s.

Gradually the building decayed under many uses in 112 years, but Frederick bought the site in 1995 for a planned extension of East Street.

In 2010, the East St. extension was completed through to I-70, the Board of Education complex was also completed next door, and the renovations began to turn the old spoke factory into the new Frederick Vistor Center, which will have it's grand opening April 2nd.

The Frederick Tourism Council, founded in 1976, a public-private partnership, will move from it's small Church St. location into the 6,400 square foot facility, which preserves many historic features from the original construction.

The Tourism Council hopes to exceed it's 20,000 to 25,000 visitors per year at it's new, more accessible, location.
