A Shrinking Crowd…What’s Up with That?

Today I attended the first day of the annual Tennessee Association of Realtors 2011 Spring Conference in Franklin, Tn.    It seems that every year, there are fewer and fewer people who are attending.  The workshops are always informative and I believe in staying current on changes, trends and general knowledge about the real estate industry. 

 

I’ve recently obtained the Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR) and Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE) designations and classes for both definitely had room for more attendees.   I know for some, it seems the market is slow.  I’m staying very busy working with my clients and by obtaining these designations.  Of course, I’m at the office tonight, catching up on email and paperwork.  These hours and the work ethic it takes to be successful is not for all…could that be why the crowd is shrinking?

Kenneth,

I believe you are absolutely correct about the hours and work ethic.  When I took my original classes to get my license 8 years ago the instructor told us all that less than half would be in the business in two years.  That sounds about right.

I think keeping up with learning and training classes is very important in real estate as other businesses.

I also think more and more sales associates can't/aren't able to make a living continuing in real estate.  We've lost quite a few agents in our area and the economy is tightening the spending belt of others in attending functions/classes and marketing.

It's great you are staying busy and we find the business is still there it just isn't going to fall into your lap like manna from heaven and you have to work harder.

The other day, I asked a friend if she was going to an upcoming Tech Conference.   This Realtor was a six-figure Top Producer back in the day.   But she told me point blank, "I cannot justify the expense at this time".

The number of booths at Trade Shows, and the Number of Attendees at State and National Conventions,  is definitely going down.     Sign of the times.   :(

I have noticed less attending events. Some have lost the drive and don't give a rip.
