Chicago Neighborhood Tours Start This Month

Chicago had another long, cold, snowy winter this year. But as spring approaches – and the sunshine and warmer temperatures melt through those 5-foot snowdrifts – Chicago neighborhoods also reemerge as great spots for guided tours. Starting March 19th, you can get a firsthand look at dozens of different Chicago neighborhoods, including several new tours that weren’t offered last year.

There’s no better way to learn about Chicago than visiting its individual neighborhoods. Each area has its own history, architecture and identifying tidbits that make it a one-of-a-kind experience. Thinking about moving to another part of the city? Or just like exploring everything Chicago has to offer? This is an excellent way to see the many sides of Chicago. Journey north to the Swedish American roots of Andersonville and Albany Park. Or travel south to the historic homes of Pullman and Jackson Park. Get a taste of Chinatown, Little Italy, Greek Town and other ethnic dining destinations such as Argyle Street (Southeast Asian) and Devon Avenue (Indian).

The city’s office of tourism and culture has stepped it up in 2011 for an impressive roster of community sightseeing opportunities. Here’s a list of Chicago neighborhood expeditions offered this year:

Albany Park
Andersonville & Edgewater
Avondale, Old Irving & The Villa
Back of the Yards & Bridgeport
Beverly & Morgan Park
Bronzeville, South Loop & IIT Campus
Bucktown, Humboldt Park & Logan Square
Chicago’s Magnificent Churches
Chinatown & Greek Town
Columbus Park & Garfield Park
Graceland Cemetery
Greek Town, Chinatown & Little Italy
Hyde Park & Kenwood
Jefferson Park, Portage Park & Six Corners
Lincoln Park, Lakeview & Wrigleyville
Little Italy
Pilsen & Little Village
Pullman Historic District
South Chicago
South Shore & Jackson Park Highlands
Taste of the Neighborhoods
Uptown & Argyle Street
West Ridge & Devon Avenue
Wicker Park & Ukrainian Village

Whether you’ve lived in the city for years or are visiting for the first time, Chicago’s neighborhood tours are a fun outing you can do on your own or share with family and friends!

All tours leave from the Chicago Cultural Center at 77 E. Randolph Street in the Loop. Some are walking tours that meander through the skyscraper-lined streets of downtown, while others take you on a coach bus to different locations throughout the city. Most tours are $30 for adults and $25 for children, students and seniors (the Taste of the Neighborhoods tour is $50/$45). Many of these tours are very popular and sell out, so book early to secure a seat! Call 312.742.1190 or check out the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture website at ExploreChicago.org
