If you are using social media to build your business, you are FAILING!

I was in a class last week and heard a comment that really made me think.  The lady mentioned that if we are only trying to build our business using social media, then we are missing the boat.  Her point was that it is all about building relationships, and those relationships eventually will be what earns you business.

I must say that I wholeheartedly agree.  How many times have I been on Facebook and I see agents posting their new listing over, and over, and over.  Or the one that every other day has the post "If  you or someone you know needs a home, I can help."

This is so NOT the way to gain the trust and respect from potential clients.  Build a relationship with them, and they will know you, know what you do, and will have that personal connection that will ultimately gain you their business and their referrals.

I want to be remembered for being the one that is truly interested in the lives of my 'friends' and is concerned with being in their lives for the right reasons.  Not just that annoying lady they know that is always begging for their business on Facebook.

I would agree, but also think there is no reason you can't touch people both by personal efforts and social media efforts. As with most things, I think there is plenty of gray in the black and white world. You never know if that woman you chatted with for 15 minutes might not see the listing you posted on Facebook later and then call you to see it...it is a crazy web we weave and there are many ways to achieve your objectives!

I hear you and agree with the relationships-first theme.  Relationships and personal rapport are key and really make a difference.  However, there is a huge place in our business for Social Marketing and Social Media.  I think that using it EXCLUSIVELY is the wrong approach (your message).  A great balance in the multiple ways we interact with our clients is the key.  It's Social Media today....what will it be 5 years from now?  Thanks! I agree, to a point.  However, if you don't ask for referrals, sometimes your friends and clients, may think that you don't need the business.  It works, both ways.  You can, also, have a business page on Facebook, so that, people will know that you are looking for more business.
