Temecula Valley High School - Every 15 Minutes Program - Awareness about Dangers of Drinking and Driving/Texting While Driving
March 23, 2011
It’s that time of year again! Temecula Valley High School’s 2011 Prom is right around the corner. It’s such an exciting time for students full of wonderful memories. But it also a time when we need to raise student awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving and texting while driving.
Tomorrow, on March 24th 2011, Temecula Valley High School kicks off its Every 15 Minutes Program. The Program gives students real-life experience with the real life risks associated with drinking alcohol and texting while driving. Students selected from a cross-section of the student body are called of class every 15 minutes. A police officer then enters the class and reads an obituary written by the “dead” student’s parents. The student then returns as the “living dead” complete with white face make-up, a coroner's tag, and a black Every 15 Minutes T-shirt.
The program also simulates a traffic collision on the school grounds for students to experience, complete with a coroner, Fire-Fighters and Paramedics. Police officers investigate arrest and book the student “drunk driver”. The program includes at trip to the morgue, the emergency room, the police department jail, and even an overnight local hotel for a student retreat for participants.
On Friday, March 25th students will participate in a school assembly full of challenging exercises. The students try on impaired simulator goggles to understand the dangers of impaired driving. The assembly is hosted by an officer, and various speakers share experiences of dealing with kids killed on traffic accidents.
The Every 15 Minutes Program is an intense and emotionally charged program that strives to re-create the horrors of consuming alcohol and texting while driving. Let’s all wish Temecula Valley High School students a great 2011 prom, and pray that they all learn a valuable lesson from this intense and moving program.
