Innovative Housing Idea - Create Green Solutions
This custom home cost Joanne Ussary $30,000. She bought a used Boeing 727 for $2,000 and spent $4,000 to move it to her lake. The renovation cost $24,000. $30,000 for a 2-bedroom home with kitchenette, bathroom, jacuzzi (in the cockpit). What a clever “green” conversion – using recycled materials and foregoing a foundation leaves the ground mostly permeable.
If you aren’t inclined to build your own airplane home, you can stay in this luxurious executive suite at the Hotel Costa Verde in Manuel Antonio, nestled next to a National Park in Costa Rica. This suite was made from a vintage 1965 Boeing 727 airplane and is perched 50' in the air with 360 degree views of spectacular garden, ocean, and jungle views. The plane was previously used by two airlines in Africa, South Africa Air, and Colombia, Avianca Airlines. The parts were salvaged from the San Jose airport and transported to the jungle
The fuselage has been clad in Costa Rican teak paneling and is outfitted as a two bedroom suite, complete with kitchenette, bathroom, and private wood deck, built atop the plane's right wing. While you relax on the deck, you will be eye-level with the toucans, sloths and monkeys hanging from the nearby trees. It's also huricane-proof! Staying there is not inexpensive ($250-$700/night, depending on the season)
