A party from Fort Detrick Maryland, headed by outgoing garrison commander Judith Robinson, visited Harpers Ferry WV on a leadership training outing Wednesday.

George Wunderlich, executive director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, in Frederick Maryland, led them through the remants of the town, mostly a tourism dependent community, but once, before the American Civil War, a thriving manufacturing center based on a major federal arsenal making firearms for the US Military.

What decisions led to the collapse of Harper Ferry's thriving economy?
That was the lesson for the civilian upper and mid-level managers to learn, as Fort Detrick goes through large changes in command and leadership due to the BRAC initiatives.

As an example, the managers learned of Major Jonathan Letterman, who, although a mid-level officer, was able to make great strides in battlefield medicine that had long term positive effects for wounded soldier's survivability.

This comes at a time when some of Fort Detrick's present and past practices have raised concerns in the local community - some even calling for the Fort to be closed.
Attendees said that they learned the inportance of communication and maintaining the conversation; of using the past to avoid repeating mistakes; and knowing how to move forward.
