By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Wayzata Lakes Realty: Eric Kodner Sells Twin Cities Homes

A recently developed website, www.FakeChecks.org, is educating consumers about the risks of falling prey to Internet and other Scams.

The site was created by the National Consumers' League, in collaboration with the Alliance for Consumer Fraud Awareness.  NCL is the nation's oldest non-profit consumer organization and the original intent of the site was to educate people about scams involving phony checks.

FakeChecks.org offers an online "Fraud Test" and several other resources, including  videotaped recreations of typical scams, prevention advice & Frequently Asked Questions, plus an online Fraud Report Form.  The site has been introduced to the public on the NBC Nightly News and elsewhere.

Charles -- The website does a pretty good job of warning the public in an informative way that almost anyone could be fooled by the most sophisticated of these scammers.

Here's a question for you:

Let's say you receive a realistic check in the mail saying you have won a lottery and this is your first payment.  However, you MUST deposit the check and then call for more information - just BE SURE to deposit the check for appoximately $4000.  If you deposit the fake check are you responsible to the bank for the 4K?

I'm not in the banking industry, but my understanding would be that the bank holds you responsible for any check you deposit until it clears.  That means if you draw down the funds and the check bounces, you're stuck.

I don't believe in lotteries.  Gambling is an investment program for people who are bad at math.
