Anyone who likes big band and swing music in the area likely knows about the Oceanside Big Band Bash at the Beach, especially with this year being the 11th annual concert. If you live in Carlsbad, this is an easy event to get to and, per past reports, very much worthwhile.
This event was held today in the Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre, with an admission price of only $5 which, in addition to music, got you a hot dot, chips, fruit and soda. Now where else in this day and age can you get a deal like that?
This annual event attracts folks from all around, and while immensely popular with those who grew up in the big band era, has become increasingly popular in the last year or two with the younger crowd who enjoy swing dancing perhaps as much as the generation or two further removed.
This year's concert lasting 7 hours featured the same 3 bands as last year, performing continuously on 2 stages
- Jay Wimmer's Big Band All Stars (check their site for photos)
- Big Band & Jazz Hall of Fame Orchestra
- Morrow's Orchestra
It's important to note that THESE groups are local, and favorites of the crowd. The cool thing about this event attended by several thousand is that it benefits a number of local human services and non-profit organizations, such as Pop Warner, Kiwanis, Boys and Girls clubs and senior citizens centers. BTW Gigmasters is a cool site- check here for big bands in the San Diego area (and for groups that will travel here) to arrange a show.
