What does this sign mean?

Do you know the history of it?

Charleston is also known as the Holy City!  So controversy regarding alcohol throughout the history is no surprise.

Many laws and rules were made, changed, challenged, and pushed to the limit throughout the years.

Right here in good ole Charleston a liquor store owner found a way around a rule that was limiting the font size of liquor stores! He hired a sign painter that painted large red circles under the info!

These days the liquor stores all just have 3 large red dots somewhere on the exterior of their building.

What a smart man!

Laura, so as an eye catcher, one guy arbitrarily decides 3 red dots are going to symbolize liquor?  And everyone was okay with that? Why 3, why red? Why still? I guess it doesn't look tacky like a local 'Liquor Barn' sign or whatever...

Laura...what a cool idea.  I like that look much better than LIQUOR FOR SALE :)

Peg - great questions... I guess back then everyone loved the brilliance of it and RED can be eye catching and naughty which maybe symbolized the hotness of it all!  I TOTALLY agree a huge sign screaming LIQUOR is not as attractive as our Dots.  The 3 may have to do with the fact that our stores are ABC stores - Alcohol Beverage Control

Well, who knew?!  I love how things common to one area are completely unheard of in another....

That's a nice way to alert folks to an ABC store.  Very tasteful, not tacky. Ours in Virginia all have the same sign which is kind of like a DMV sign or something.  Looks very "governmental."

Laura, that is cool.  Wonder what made him think of that.  It is much better than the neon Jack Daniels sign.

Laura ~ That’s pretty slick… where there is a will, there’s a way.
