Meth Lab Awareness - Check to see if the home your buying was one!

The other day I was showing a property that an REO property which was vacant which had a very unique odor.  It wasn't pet smell, smoke smell or sewer smell.

The only thing I could think of was that it was a potential meth lab or something.  I have never smelled meth so I wasn't sure if I was on the right track or not.  I called the listing agent and let them know of my concerns and have not heard back to their thoughts on the odor.

In the meantime, I found a great site by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare that provides insight and raises meth awareness.  It even provides a list of homes that were identified as meth labs throughout the state.  Fortunately, in Idhao, it is a pretty short list.  I just sent an email to them to ask if they though it was pretty all inclusive or if I would need to call the local police departments or somewhere else to get the complete list.

In the mean time, here is the link so you can check on any homes you might be considering buying or just to see how close this problem may have been to your current home.

Meth is a huge problem nationwide.  I can't believe people knowingly still use it after they find out what the ingredients can be and the health risks associated with it.  It is extremely addictive and it doesn't take decades for the negative effects to show like alcohol and tobacco.  Within just a few months they can break out with extreme acne and after just a few years, people start losing teeth, etc.  The socio-economic burden is much more detrimental.

This is a very serious issue, but I saw a cute photo a while back that illustrates how it can take a fun loving soul and twist it into something totally different.

Banks selling REO's like to shield themselves behind "we don't know anything" and "buyer beware" disclosures. The same goes for houses flagged with lead based paint.

Unfortunately, I live in the meth capital of the world and it is very detrimental to all involved.  it breaks my heart when children are involved.  Thanks for the post.

Meth labs are so dangerous.  Even touching the stuff can be dangerous.

Jim, definitely a problem that we as agents should be aware of.  I've attended workshops here about knowing what to look for to help alert the authorities and for our own protection.

@Dave, I think we should all let our NAR Directors know we object to the REO's sheilding themselves from these disclosures.  I will go send an email to my NAR Director right now for Idaho.

@Sarah, I am not sure where your from as your signature line doesn't tell me where Tri-Lakes is.  The Mayor probably is glad unless it is like the ex-Mayor of Washington, DC that was caught smoking crack with a Hooker while he was in office (prior to being re-elected).

@William, I have never seen this drug in person and I would like to keep it that way.  I hope and pray my kids can say the same thing!

@Nick, I think the idea of workshops to raise awareness is a great idea.  If you have any materials or contacts, I would love them so we can duplicate those efforts here in Idaho.  I have absolutely no tolerance for Meth.

I didn't know there were sites state wide to give this information.  I'll check on NC.

Idaho just started tracking this a few years ago.

Eva, I am glad you enjoyed the picture.  A friend of mine sent it from North Carolina and I new it needed to end up on ActiveRain.  :)
