The other day I was showing a property that an REO property which was vacant which had a very unique odor. It wasn't pet smell, smoke smell or sewer smell.
The only thing I could think of was that it was a potential meth lab or something. I have never smelled meth so I wasn't sure if I was on the right track or not. I called the listing agent and let them know of my concerns and have not heard back to their thoughts on the odor.
In the meantime, I found a great site by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare that provides insight and raises meth awareness. It even provides a list of homes that were identified as meth labs throughout the state. Fortunately, in Idhao, it is a pretty short list. I just sent an email to them to ask if they though it was pretty all inclusive or if I would need to call the local police departments or somewhere else to get the complete list.
In the mean time, here is the link so you can check on any homes you might be considering buying or just to see how close this problem may have been to your current home.
Meth is a huge problem nationwide. I can't believe people knowingly still use it after they find out what the ingredients can be and the health risks associated with it. It is extremely addictive and it doesn't take decades for the negative effects to show like alcohol and tobacco. Within just a few months they can break out with extreme acne and after just a few years, people start losing teeth, etc. The socio-economic burden is much more detrimental.
This is a very serious issue, but I saw a cute photo a while back that illustrates how it can take a fun loving soul and twist it into something totally different.
