A joint project of Mount St. Mary's University, in Emmitsburg, and Constellation Energy, formerly BG&E, to install a 60 acre, thin-film, photovoltaic Solar Farm on agricultural and institution land seems to be on it's way to being approved by Frederick County Board of Appeals.
The parties were requested to supply proof of interest in the project, and the Historic Preservation Commission Commission needs to render it's findings, before final approval.
The proposal is in response to a State of Maryland request to develop long term power purchase agreements from renewable power to be added to the power grid. The state has accepted this proposal, and the Maryland Environmental Service has shown that the project will have no measurable impact on neighboring areas.
The 15.9 Megawatt facility will be fenced for security and safety concerns, and will not require regular staffing, Construction plans are to begin this June and to complete the project within one year.
Perhaps this project, and the wind power projects in the mountains and hopefully 10 miles off the Maryland seashore, near Ocean City, will bring Maryland to the forefront of renewable energy production, and reduce our dependence on non-renewable rsources.
Another technology "feather in the cap" move for Maryland and Frederick!
