Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida is the perfect way to welcome in Spring. I have to admit I played hooky today with my husband and took in a Spring Training game between the Florida Marlins and the NY Mets. If you've never been to one of these games and if you're anywhere near Florida or Arizona, give yourself a treat and take in a game. (Hurry... the "real" season begins March 31).
It's an excellent opportunity for true baseball fans (young and old) to see their team up close and personal. Many of these fans arrive early, baseball gloves in hand waiting for a chance to see, take pictures of, and even speak to one of their favorite players. Today, I saw a son proudly tell his father of his conversation with one of the coaches. Dressed in orange and blue, he carried a bag full of baseball souvenirs. His father had that smile only a father could have seeing his son share his love of the game. BTW- this father-son pair were about 65 and 35 respectively!
Roger Dean Stadium is about 35 minutes north of Delray Beach and just off I-95. It is surrounded by Abacoa, a neo-traditional planned community which also includes Florida Atlantic University's MacArthur Campus. It is ideal for the person who wants where they live, work and play to be within walking distance of each other. I heard one patron say he'd driven over in his golf cart!
But back to the game, it's fun seeing the fans, and I'd bet a good number of them are actually fans of whoever the visiting team is.
But the real fun comes in seeing families with their children,
introducing them to this Summer sport
... and seeing more seasoned fans reliving their youth,
the days when they sat next to their own fathers
and learned about what we call America's sport.
Fans can sit on "The Burm"
