Pasadena Condo Residents  --- Put Out The Smokes, What A Drag

This morning's edition of the Pasadena Star News had an article that stated the April 4 city council meeting would "entertain" an extension of the city's smoking ban. I guess that means the meeting will follow happy hour and as always, there is no cover charge at the Pasadena CA city council meetings.

According to the article, current anti-smoking rules could be extended to include prohibitions on smoking in apartments, condominiums and townhomes.  Based on the recommendation of the Public Safety Committee smoking could be defined as a "public nuisance".

As you can imagine, this has sparked fueled ignited caused controversy.

The anti-smoking movement may have started in California --- remember when people used to smoke in the workplace?   Remember people smoking in restaurants?   The state outlawed smoking in bars/clubs in 1998 and Pasadena has made it illegal to smoke within 20 feet outside ATMs, shopping malls and restaurants/bars.

Is this a quality of life issue?   If approved, the city could impose fines beginning at $100.00 to offenders.  The rules if enacted would go into effect in 2014 according to the Pasadena Star News.

What say you?  Personal freedom?  Too much government control?  Quality of life?

I believe that smoking in personal units of a multi-unit building should be banned. The stench does leak out when doors and windows and doors are opened.

Vickie --- that's an argument I have heard as well.  It was reported that one city councilman said "It is analogous to the noise-ordinance and you don't have the right to play music so loud that it effects your neighbor".

I agree with Vickie. I lived next door to a smoker in my first condo and our shared wall was where my walk-in closet was located. My clothes always stunk of smoke.

Howdy and afternoon to you Michael

Michael,
I think that its a total bull ordinance, and that its a infringements on private rights of folks. Y'all best look out, the next thing they will be saying y'all can't have a beer or class of any kind of alcoholic drink in your own home. They might even start saying that folks can't stay up after 9:00 P.M. in their own home.

Have a good one

Chris Ann --- I have had clients walk out or not consider a home because of a "smoky" smell.

Dale ---  I understand your views and I have heard that there are concerns of over-regulation or too many laws.

Todd --- thanks for the suggest.

Michael - As a former smoker here in LA county, I do remember the days of being able to smoke just about anywhere.  Even though I am nine yrs smoke free now, I'm not one of those militant anti-smokers.  I have no problem standing around a bunch a smokers.  I don't know, I guess smoking vicariously through their second hand smoke is sort of my guilty pleasure.

However, I do think that smokers should be respectful and considerate of others and if a majority of HOA residents don't want smoking in their complex, then majority rules.  That's the way it works, whether we like it or not.

Hi Donne --- first congratulations on nine years smoke free.  I am conflicted with this proposal -- I am not and never have been a smoker so the idea of a smoke free living environment certainly is something I find refreshing(hmm pun intended??) but I do believe in less government interference and that's why I wrote this post to see how others viewed the proposal.   Thanks for commenting, it's appreciated.
