It was a rainy Saturday afternoon in Upstate South Carolina so Jason and I decided to check out Stockade ‘n Stuff in Pickens. This is a store that sells antiques and collectibles out of an old jail house that used to hold 80-100 Pickens County prisoners from 1935 until 1968-69. We had seen the billboards and watched the two YouTube videos for Stockade ‘n Stuff and were both intrigued.
The entry to Stockade ‘n Stuff is a wide gate of prison bars. The interior is surprisingly bright and dry considering that it is built of granite stone, concrete and steel. The large windows have bars on them too.
Owners Jeannie & Wayne Gilstrap both work at Stockade ‘n Stuff. They first opened the antique mall to sell off the memorabilia and treasures they had collected for 55 years at their Chevrolet dealership in Pickens. There is much change in their inventory from what you see on the YouTube videos. It looks as though most of the GM promotional model cars and posters are gone now.
The current inventory at "Stockade ‘n Stuff" comes from antique auctions and estate sales. Jeannie has chosen some gorgeous furniture pieces to sell. Other items for sale include vintage jewelry, Pickens County old time photos, butter churns, old wheelchair, porcelain, pottery (Hull, McCoy, Westmoreland, crystal & glass (Waterford, Depression, Fenton, opalescence, milk, carnival, etc.) and so much more.
Stockade ‘n Stuff is truly an original setting for an antique store. Drop by 2932 Gentry Memorial Highway Hwy 8 in Pickens, SC 29671 and/or call 864-979-4891 for hours of operation and directions. You can also email jeannie231@bellsouth.net
