Debt Collectors

By
Real Estate Agent

We all know that debt refers to something that is owed, and it is our obligation to pay up or it will fall in a debt collector's hands.

Bills pile up, debt increases, assets are mismanaged, and in the process we are frustrated, it happens.  But a few reasonable adjustments may go a long way toward minimizing the frustration we feel.  We don't want the embarrassing calls from debt collectors nor do we want them showing up at our homes or our jobs to remind us to make payments.  So in order to avoid this embarrassing situation, we will try to meet our financial obligations.

Financial experts suggest that we pay off credit card debt.  It shouldn't take an expert to tell us this, after all we know this or we will be reminded but the creditors or the collection gods.  So work out a plan to pay off said debt.  Keep in mind however, that providing for your family the necessities of life comes first. And it doesn't matter what a collector may say, paying that credit card bill is not part of the necessities of life.  It's an obligation so again, work out a plan to pay off your debt.

Some collection agencies have coerce payment of debt through harassment, oppression, and by being abusive but these practices are against the law. How do you stop the calls?   Ask for the name of the collection agency, write a letter to them, and by law they should stop calling you.

In addition, the The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, has a few guidelines to protect consumers:  Please follow this link:Protecting America's Consumers

Dee, I had a client that said one company was calling every 15 minutes!     It is wise to pay your bills, but when there is a layoff or change in income, it can be extremely difficult!

The harassment is rampant apparently.  I probably talk to at least three people a day who can use this information.  A great article to email out to those who are suffering through this economy.  Thank you for the link Dee.

Hi Joan,
If your client is still being harassed, send them the link and tell them to write the collection agency a letter.

Hi Kevin,
You are welcomed.  Maybe you can write a blog and let us know if the suggestions help them.

Aida,
I never thought of debt as a disease, I think of it as a means to an end but where is the end?  You may want to uninstall FireFox and start over.  Download FireFox from mozilla.org and then the add on Scribefire. I tried it more that once before it worked for me.

My parents taught me to use credit only on extremely large purchases like houses or cars and if I used it for anything else, to pay it off as quickly as possible, preferably the next month.

Jim,
Great advise.  Sometimes all that's needed is a lifestyle change so that we do not sink into debt.
