Dogwoods blooming, a perfect time to reflect on the season

My daughter wanted to pick the flowers from a Dogwood tree in our yard this weekend.  When I asked her if you knew how special a dogwood flower was she looked at me and said, "no why?"  As we looked at the flower I told her this story.

Years ago, the Dogwood tree was a straight and tall tree, it provided sturdy timber for many things such as homes, furniture, etc. So when it came time for the Roman soldiers to make the cross that Christ would carry to his on crucifixion they used the timber of a Dogwood tree.

After that day God decided that never again would the Dogwood tree grow straight and tall and strong but instead would grow short and twisted and would bloom for a short time before and after the celebration of Christ's resurrection, Easter.  The flower would have just 4 petals to represent the hands and feet of Christ, they would be marked with a hole and stained with the blood of Christ, the center of the flower would be circular and raised to represent the head of Christ wearing the crown of thorns.

Next time you see a Dogwood tree, take a closer look and see for yourself.

I miss dogwoods!  Went to college in Nashville but live in Phoenix now - they obviously wouldn't grow here!
