On being SAD (From a wannabe snowbird)

... or having SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Waiting for the outhouse

Like many bathrooms, ours has some reading material I will peruse occasionally. A favourite is 'Another Lost Whole Moose Catalogue' ... 'a Yukon way of Knowledge' book of an assortment of articles written primarily for the influx of tourists they may see (in the summer).

A story by Mike Hodgson described Cabin Fever and SAD which includes signs of:

  • a run down feeling
  • a  general sadness and feeling of emptiness
  • a disturbed sleep
  • overeating
  • lack of interest in activities
  • poor concentration
  • a lowering of sexual energy

Yep - I've got SAD. ... although I am sure I could find a multitude of other reasons to account for the symptoms.

The winter has not been an easy one this year ... and it seems to be hanging on yet as there is a lot of snow out there, with some snowfall again today.

Knowing how much diesel fuel I have gone through, I know I have spent 30-40 hr. on the tractor alone to plough snow.

The winter season started out with a feeling that it was going to be a tough one. Although; I was certainly ready for it with all the yard preparations and major jobs out of the way well before the first frost and snow.

A tropical vacation would have been most welcome; but, it was not in the plans as our time and financial resources would not allow a 'great escape'.

Being new in the Real Estate business, I suddenly had different visions as how to solicit some business.   But then, there may have been some other force driving those visions.

I saw many of my acquaintances and generation soaking up the sun at their Arizona retreats.

I was inspired to research the properties in that snowbird state (perhaps favoured by Albertans) and to liaise with a REALTOR® I knew to work out of Scottsdale, in thought for some referral business.  In fact, she was even a transplanted Canuck, holding dual citizenship and living in Scottsdale for several years now.

The referral consideration has been shelved at this time … perhaps a sign that things are looking better here … and perhaps a sign for something in the future.

One thing for sure - Next year, we have to absolutely plan a lot of outdoor activity, even if it is in a local arena or West Edmonton Mall.   But Arizona may get a visit … or Nevada … or Hawaii … or ??.

When my children were young they asked " when settlers came to the new world why did so many go to Canada instead of South Carolina where you don't die in the winter?" :-)

Len, hang in there, winter is just about over. I know this because soon I won't have to watch the Leafs anymore. Thank the Lord for small mercies.

Steve and Jan ... The summers here are awesome!  But you are right ... as long as you live to enjoy them.

Thanks for the note Malcolm ... Compassion from another Canuck and just throwing some hockey into the equation.  You are right though - it is sports like hockey that keep us going ... and when are teams are not doing well, we tend to be like them. ...  The Oilers went down almost at the beginning of the season and the Flames are almost there.  .... Maybe have to look further west at the real Canucks for some hope.

I have always been a sun bunny. Keep me south of Interstate 10, and I'm pretty happy. LOL

Here we are back at the start of November again - with the forcast at the end of the week with a P.O.P. of 60% chance of snow.  -  Thanks for bringing this post out of the archives Russel - I am reminded there is sun - 'at least warm sun' in other places of the world

I suggest going half-back.  Have you tried South Georgia?  We have the beauty and the warmth of S. Florida without their prices.  Contact me, I would love to work with Buyer's Agent from Canada.

I have a good friend in the Toronto area and we were just discussing this yesterday.

I live in an area where I am almost completely surrouned by all retirees; 70 and over.  We are within 1 - 2 miles of banks, grocery stores, pharmacies, religious centers, senior center (less than a 1/2 mile away and the city tennis courts) and much more less than 4 miles away).... call me.

We have low taxes and low utilities in our area.  i.e.  average property taxes about $800 per year on a $100,000 home.  Average utilities including all sanitation, all electrical, all sewer, all water about $175 per month (averaged out over the year); my last bill was $125!! That included everything but TV and Telephone.

If you are a Buyer's agent, Contact me at 229-469-0415./Spacial Realty.
