This week I had the opportunity to speak at career day at an elementary school in Algonquin. I was prepared, I was focused & I still got nervous! Anyway, I had over 60 students come to my room throughout the day & after introducing myself I asked each class this question:
What does the word Realtor mean to you?
By far the most common response was "selling houses". The other responses were:
Pricing Agreements Bidding Negotiate HGTV
Money Appointments Being Organized MLS
I was surprised by the variety of questions the kids asked - everything from most expensive house I've sold to pickiest buyers to have I appeared on House Hunters yet. More kids knew about foreclosures than I was prepared for & one even asked if short sales took a short time to finish. Some students knew all too well about the real estate business as a few had parents who have left the business recently.
I showed them the difference between a buyers' market & a sellers' market - a first lesson in supply & demand for many of them. I had them negotiate a later curfew with me, getting them to exercise that important skill. A few kids got into it, offering everything from cleaning toilets to stunning academic performances, but I will say I was surprised how many will turn to tears to get what they want!
I found out that although today's young people are not watching the evening news they are living the headlines. They reminded me that youth is fleeting & when it's gone, it is gone! I can't wait to do it again.
