Early blooms. As you probably have suspected, I’m the kind of person that enjoys helping others. I have quite a bit of experience from which I can draw, and as a consequence others often seek my advice and assistance.

But there are times when I am very focused on the matters at hand, and any interruption can be very distracting. In those cases I simply ask that the requested assistance be deferred to a more convenient time.

I am always surprised when this request for deference is either ignored or resisted. You would be amazed at how many times the person asking me for help has the expectation of an immediate audience and a quick resolution.

The prevalence of inconsideration seems to have escalated over the last few years. I blame it on the Internet and the “I want it now” attitude that pervades our society.

And to tell you the truth, I don’t like it one bit.

Morning Richard, I know exactly what you mean... people want it NOW and when they hear anything to the contrary they are shocked and unhappy... Keep helping who you can and who respects you and your time. Have a great day! :D

Richard, It's reflected in the "answer my call within 5 minutes or I've already called another agent" behavior.  It's a catch-22.  We take care of the clients we're with THIS MOMENT, your turn is as soon as we've finished giving them our full attention :)

Richard every time I try that my wife just repeats the request and won't go away until I stop what I'm doing to help. Clients are usually more considerate.

As you say, 'want it now!' society.  Thereis very little respect for our fellow man's time.  It is all about me!

Sadly, we're an instant gratification society and some folks just don't understand the concept of, "I'll be happy to help you when I'm finished doing what I'm doing."

Richard, on he flip side, we can be accountable for our time and focus, and simply turn off, what ever it is that is distracting us. Create a message on cell phone and/or computer that says, "I am in a meeting now and will be rturning calls/emails at xyz time," It can help manage expectations, I've found

Richard, is not it the instant gratification age? I think it started with the TV dinners in the oven, to have dinner fixed and over with in a hurry WHILE watching TV. With deferring your time for another because you are busy just give them a reasonable expectation when you can get to them, and they just have to accept that, OR NOT. If not, it is their problem not yours.

Believe it or not, when I wrote this I was not talking about customers or clients. I am talking about other agents and others that expect me to drop what I am doing and helping THEM with THEIR business!

Hey Richard,

I am a loyal client to my escrow officer because she will help me when I call her.  She can change gears easily and is extraordinarily well-organized and meticulous with detail work so I guess she just resumes with her work after she helps me on the phone.  Like you, I don't change gears as easily as she does.

I think sometimes people get so focused on their immediate need that they don't realize how unrealistic it is to expect others to drop everything instantly.  But I agree that I'm WAY more receptive to those who acknowledge that I may not be at their disposal 24/7.

I think most people think that their urgency is more important than what anyone else might be in the middle of working on. It is our society, everyone wants what they want and they want it NOW!

Richard, I often get hit with tech questions at the worst time. One other thing I found is that when I am on the computer there is the perception I am not busy. Go figure.
