Is Stik.com Annoying You???

By
Real Estate Agent with Beautiful Day Real Estate 9040964

I am annoyed by the stik.com posts on Facebook to the point that I had to unfriend people using it!

Are you tired of seeing this....

" I just signed up for Stik and I need your recommendation. Please visit my page and click the "Recommend" button. Thanks!"

It is just like junk mail! I would love to be a part of Stik, it's a good idea for people to find people their friends know but they have to do a better job to stop the annoyingness of it.  It is great for Realtors but I don't want to put my family and friends through the spam.

Hopefully they improve it soon!

Never heard of it, but it does sound annoying and sounds like the type of thing that can spread viruses.

Hi Karen, my name is Nathan Labenz and I am one of the Stik.com co-founders. We're always looking for more feedback, from consumers and professionals, so we appreciate you devoting some time to the topic here.

I would like to clarify a couple things:

  • Any request for recommendation you have received from another realtor, or anyone, has come because they selected you as someone who would recommend them. You can see how this works at our "Ask for Recommendations" page (Note: you'll have to login so we can suggest friends in your network from whom to request recommendations. The same page allows users to recommend others and we encourage professionals to do so.)
  • I fully endorse employing good Facebook etiquette with Stik, and we do not encourage professionals to request recommendations from "loose" Facebook connections, but, as with all apps,  it is always the user's choice how he or she uses the tools developers introduce. The beauty of Facebook is that is largely a self-policing crowd that will ostracize individuals that abuse access to your network.

We'd be glad to talk more about you might use Stik to build your real estate business. It'd be great if you and your readers could offer specific ways we could tailor the service to your needs.

Best,

Nathan

Relax and follow me...I know the way home.

Hi Nathan!

Thanks for responding!

It would be nice if it were more personal AND if it explained what stik is.

When you see someone saying the same thing to all different people then it's just junk.  If you want someone to refer you it should be personal and asked of each in a personal way.  If you received 20 wonderful gifts from people would you send them all a pre-printed card with the same message and even your name pre-printed?

Also, there are so many viruses on Facebook you have to be careful what you reply to or look at.  If you look at the responses to this post you will see that there are people who have no idea what Stik is and even one response that says it sounds like the type of thing that spreads viruses.  So it would be a good idea to let people know what it is.  This, "I just signed up for Stik and I need your recommendation. Please visit my page and click the "Recommend" button. Thanks!"Doesn't explain and looks like something you need to avoid, especially when you see it 20 times from one person.

Maybe it would be better if it was just a post on their wall where people could read what it's about and refer them if they would like.

Also, I went on Stik to sign up and it asks for "request for permission" to post things on my wall and to my family and friends and so many other things.  I stopped right there.  You say above that we can control who we send what to, then why do you need to have all of that control over my facebook page?  My associate allowed that once and she ended up with a virus that was sending all kinds of posts to her group of people without her even knowing it.

It does sound like a good idea but it is poorly executed to look impersonal, annoying and like spam.

If it improves let me know.  I would like to be on board.

Take care,

Karen

Thanks for the feedback Karen.  I whole-heartedly agree that this part of the product needs improvement, and in fact we are planning to introduce customizeable messages in the next couple of days.  Starting soon, users will be able to send a more personal note to ask for recommendations.

With regard to Facebook permissions, again, I agree that the list is too long.  It's unfortunate because we really only use Facebook information to identify which of your friends you are closest with in real life.  This helps us provide more relevant search results and suggestions, which is an important part of the overall service.

I understand your skepticism because I have also seen tons of junk applications on the Facebook platform. But, we plan to be around for the long term, and we'll work hard to win your trust and bring you on to the system.

I can see a benefit to Stik but unfortunately it has been stigmatized by somereal estate agents that are using it to spam their friends. Sad.

I fellow real estate agent signed up with Stik -I think- because she doesn't remember....and constantly stuff is popping up on her site pretending to be from her...I am annoyed as I really want to supporter her in her work but if this is not soemthing that she actively does, I don't want to deal with it. Thanks for writing about it.
